My baby has just begun crawling, and I am finding it impossible to keep my floors clean. How do I ask people to remove their shoes without offending them?

just tell them, for the safety of the baby, to please reomve their shoes. remind them that people do carry things in from outside on their shoes, and you do not want your baby crawling in it, or putting it in his/her mouth. most poeple will understand and comply.

"I was wondering if you'd mind removing your shoes........? (have an uncomfortable, sorry expression because ofcourse you are nice, and don't want to inconvenience them at the same time.) My baby has just started crawling and it'd be really useful to have the floors really clean. Thank you sooo much".

I teach English as a second language; I have many Asian students in my class and we recently discussed this issue.

It is often particularly uncomfortable for older people to remove their shoes. Typically, families from Asian countries provide slippers for their guests to use while visiting. In this way, they follow their tradition, provide for their guests' comfort and keep their floors tidy too.

Why not invest in some inexpensive cloth shoes or slippers in a few sizes? You can find them in import stores or you could probably find a reasonable alternative at Target. Providing indoor footwear along with the polite "would you mind" should help you avoid offense.

Say, please remove your shoes. If they get offended, they can go home. I would rather offend someone rather than calling 9-1-1.

I would probably say, "I apologize, but if you don't mind, could you please remove your shoes?" Or just put a little, decorative sign near the door that's like, "Welcome! Please Remove your Shoes!"

...Or move to Japan.
