Well, start by answering his question. What, if anything, CAN he do about it?
It is a standard seat? Is anything wrong with it that could be repaired? What would help to make it more supportive? What can you do, and what can he do, to help the situation?

What legal rights do you have? None whatsoever.
The seat in your truck is fitted by the manufacturer and your boss has no obligation to modify it for you. Indeed, any modification outside the original manufacturers specification would almost certainly be against the Construction and Use Regulations and therefore illegal.
This is not a Health and Safety issue (the seating at work regs do not cover drivers) - if the seat functions as the manufacturer intended, you either have to live with it, get some sort of back support (most truck seats do have built-in lumbar support these days) or find another line of work.

If the truck has the original seat that was made for the truck and it is not worn down there is little you can expect your boss to do. You can ask him, if you purchase one of the items that will help back pain, will he pay for it or split the cost with you. Otherwise you are on your own.

What do you mean 'legal rights'? Do you intend to sue your employer because your damn back hurts? People like you make me puke. Get a desk job, be a bum or perhaps BUY a really good seat for the truck you drive.
Damn...

I was in a car accident about 6 months ago, with significant low back injuries. My physicl therapist recommended a back support from relax-the-back. The one I purchased is small and portable, it cost only $55. They also have something called sacro-ease which covers the entire seat, but is more expensive- about $120 I believe.

You can get a cover for your seat that would make it more comfortable, or you can look for another line of work

If you have a bona fide medical disability, your employer would have to make reasonable accomodations to correct the situation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Otherwise, they don't have to do anything, and you are always free to find yourself another line of work.

As you spend all or most of your working day in that position it is your bosses responsibility to ensure that you are comfortable in that working position as laid down by the health and safety executive.
