In order to get pain relief from perscription medication it requires at least a two pronge method. One medication is taken twice a day -- an extended release tablet good for about 12 hours of relief and then you can supplement with a medication good for about 4 hours for breakthrough pain.
One of the best programs is Oxycodone ER 20 mg. every 12 hours with Oxycodone 5 mg. tabs one or two every four hours as needed. This program is overseen by a doctor WHO REALLY KNOWS YOU AND YOUR PAIN. You will not get a regime like this from someone you see once or twice a year for the flu. The pain must make your life very hard and the doctor knows this. The meds are given in conjunction with a pain program which teaches you relaxation techniques, exercises designed to help with the pain, etc. There are pain centers in almost every big city hospital. Be prepared for the side effects. At first you will be pretty much snowed and will only gradually be able to resume your life. Then you can pretty much forget about being able to defecate. The pain meds almost stop the natural movement of the bowels. Should you get to the point where you want to reduce the med doseage, there is a form of withdrawl you will go through. Big guns, this. Pain is a powerful motivator and to seek an end to it becomes your first any only consideration. Do not attempt a pain program without very reliable medical oversight. You don't give specifics about your condition, but I hope this gives you generalilzed information you can discuss with your doctor.

One of the strongest available analgesic is a 72 hour fentanyl patch (Duragesic). Oxycontin is also an extremely powerful opiate. These drugs are used in the treatment of chronic pain and should only be used when other pain medications and therapies do not seem to work.
