The walls are a very light blue. The previous owner actually used white paint and mixed very light (lighter than Carolina Blue) blue to get this color. The bookcase is black and the entertainment armoir is very dark brown/almost black like ebony color. There's one chair already in the den and it's a brown "papa-san," chair with a deep red/ magenta cushion. The floors are light colored bamboo hard wood. What color love seat or sofa could fit this scheme?

go with a beige sand color sofa. Neutral sofas are the best and easiest for decorating. Then buy throw pillows in brown, black, beige, magenta and blue. Place them on the sofa and love seat. Also buy a great magenta throw for the arm of your sofa. Buy an area rug with these colors and this will tie the room together possibly a persian rug. If you have windows I would do just a simple side drape in beige sand lined silk which can be purchased in linensandthings.com for $29.99 a panel. Saw them there. Buy a plant and place it on an oriental stand for greenery. Books, accessories, photos of family, and you have a great, warm cozy living room.

It is so much easier to choose wall color after you choose you major upholstery colors...hopefully you are willing to paint over the blue (it may be a very "dated" blue that will be hard to co-ord) if that is the case then I would keep the colors down to three. Your deep red magenta...your honey tones with your floor and the base of the papa chair and the coffee colors with the other case goods. Sofa should be a transitional st lye in a nice chenille or a durable fab in a honey tone (deep warm beige or a nice banana yellow ) pull the colors together with pillows that have your three colors and paint the wall a deeper shade of your sofa.

A rule of thumb I always refer to in decorating is to keep it neutral on all the big stuff. You can infuse color with things that can be changed easily like pillows, wall color, curtains, accessories etc. Keep the furniture in the warm neutrals khakis to dark browns. Try not to make everything look exactly the same. Matching is bad, but blending is great!
Pull colors from the rug, if you have a colorfull one. You don't want everything in the room to fight for attention. Create an environment not a display.

Though it sounds great to add more color on the furniture you must think long term. What are the odds that you are going to change the wall color anytime soon?

I would stick with a nuetural color on big funiture. Find throw pillows that will match the papason and the wall. Mix & Match to get that eclectic style.

1] chocolate brown [ with deep red throw pillows, or pale blue throw pillows ]
2] deep red [ with pale blue throw pillows ]
3] sapphire blue [ with deep red or pale blue throw pillows ]
Don't forget to add other accessories in the colors, such as
rugs, lamps or shades, another chair maybe, window coverings, pots of palnts or vases, and candles.
