thats very interesting folks, i wonder who came up with the gas tank exploding in movies then, unless that was inspired by a rare real life incident

Although an accident can cause a fire, an explosion of the gas tank is an exceedingly rare event. Even when it does happen, it's not like you see in the movies. Gasoline itself doesn't explode, but burns. The vapors can explode but the conditions for that are fairly exacting. If the fuel vapor and oxygen ratios are off by a couple of percentage points nothing much at all will happen. If there is no fuel leak there will not be much of a fire at all in most cases and there certainly won't be any explosions.

Depends on how full it is and where it is hit at?..they don't always explode..the fuller the tank..the less likely it will explode..however, don't be using cell phones and have your ignition turned on at the gas pump...this can cause a huge explosion under the right circumstances...all it has to do, is the vapor collect and you press a button and boom!...that is how some houses explode when people walk in that have butane and leave a pilot light off or a leak...end result..no home...

actually fire is a more common side effect to an accident especially in older cars. new cars have more safety features and if wrecks were causing gas tanks to explode, a recall would happen real quick. and an empty tank is more likely to explode.

Gasoline doesn't actually explode. It ignites, but only if there's a spark. Therefore, while car accidents often cause fires, they almost never cause explosions. That's just a Hollywood myth.
