Depends where you live, here in the Netherlands they have it ready for you in a week. In the USA it seems to cost more than 3 months, at the moment.

If uou are in the United States, the truth is it is currently taking More than 16 weeks...probably 20. People who said LESS must not have been reading the MANY comments on answers from people who have been waiting more then 4 months. If you plan to travel to Mexico, Canada, or the Caribbean before Sept. 30, and if you go ahead and apply for your passport, you will be allowed to travel without a passport if you follow the instructions for the "flexibility" program at the passport website below.

In the US it used to take 4-6 weeks, but because of the increase in demand it now takes 10 weeks or more.

Are you in the UK? Passport offices are busier in the summer months. It depends too on whether you are applying for your first or for a renewal.

I think 2 weeks - express, 4 weeks - normal. It's by mail.
But you can also check it out if there is a faster service in your city where you could go apply directly like I did. You could get it same day in that case.
