If your soup tastes "soapy" it is because the ratio of liquid to seasoning is not right. The amounts of herbs and spice you tell us and the combination may produce that. You have no mention of salt or how much water you added. Add some salt if you haven't and a few tablespoons of ketchup. Sautee an onion in olive oil - one whole small one or 1/2 a larger one on medium heat until it is clear and add it to the soup.

Deglaze the pan with some canned chicken broth or add some chicken bullion to taste 2 cubes or one teaspoon of granulated bullion. Beef bullion will work well too if you don't have chicken.

I noticed that it is quite heavily spiced/herbed. I also would not recommend mixing curry with basil and thyme. The best seasoning for lentils is rosemary, sage, and thyme. Not whole teaspoons, just healthy pinches unless you are cooking for 50. Lentils are delicate and need delicate seasoning. Salt will bring up the flavor as will broth or bullion. Tomato paste is another thing you may try. Only about a tablespoon to begin. Whisk it in a little water first so you don't have to chase clumps of it around in the soup pot.

If you can't rescue this soup - toss it and try again.

use more garlic and add onions and use chicken or veggie broth instead of water. when you start to make soup you should always sautee the onions celery and garlic together until they are soft then add the herbs and spices and 1/4 cup of soy sauce then the lentils and sautee for a couple minutes for the flavors to have direct contact with the lentils. then add the carrots and tomatoes also cumin would be a good addition to this recipe, it does sound a bit bland having no salt or anything

You don't say what you made it in, e.g. water or broth. But to my mind there's just not enough going on in it to give it any spice. Here's my favorite lentil soup recipe.

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS
2 onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
6 cups water or beef broth
1 cup red lentils
1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, drained
1 (19 ounce) can cannellini beans
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1/2 cup diced carrots
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon olive oil
DIRECTIONS
In large pot saute; the onions, garlic, and ginger in a little olive oil for about 5 minutes.
Add the water, lentils, chick peas, white kidney beans, diced tomatoes, carrots, celery, garam masala, cardamom, cayenne pepper and cumin. Bring to a boil for a few minutes then simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours or longer, until the lentils are soft.
Puree half the soup in a food processor or blender. Return the pureed soup to the pot, stir and enjoy!

Add some more pepper, both red and ground black, and salt to taste. Then chop some green onions (scallions, spring onions) and sprinkle generoulsly on top of each serving.

Some salt, parsley (fresh or flakes) and chicken or vegetable stock or broth would help it out.

Add a can of broth or stock before adding the salt, you may not need the salt.

I would add some salt, spike or other seasoning, peas, some red skin potatoes maybe.

oh and make sure you dont over cook it, veg soups generally should not be overcooked

sounds like it could use a few chicken cubes, or chicken stock if you have it. you can add some more garlic or garlic powder. add some ground beef or pork or turkey whatever floats your boat. hope it turns out yummy for you.
