End Global Warming&starvation, we rich westerners all take a holiday, and let the rest of the world catch up?

Ok heres another! Satish Kumar, in Resurgence magazine, once said that if he was Prime Minister, he'd give us all 6 months holiday, to let the rest of the world catch up!. Very good idea.. All of us are far far richer than William the conqueror or Henry 8th, who by Uk poverty standards would have been considered to be in poverty, without a fridge, TV, or a phone. When do we say 'enough' we've got enough, now we'll enjoy life, start making lovely things we keep, stop filling up holes in the ground and pursue what really interests us, and stop keeping up with the Jones's, ignore their immaturity, dont go along with it. Live Good, Live Light, and Start to Share, not Fight like little kids.

Interesting point about Henry VIII and Willy the Conq, very true as well. How did they manage with all those palaces, all that land, and the gold and jewles and servants but no TV or phone - poor, poor sods.

As for when we say 'enough' - we don't. It's human nature for many people to want more, bigger, better, faster etc. We think a 24 inch TV will be enough until we get one, then it's too small and we want a 36 inch, then a 48 inch, then a home cinema system with satellite, DVD and projector. Which is fine until Sony come up with a model that makes tea and washes the dishes and we have to have one of those instead.

I agree with what you're saying about drawing the line and not being so obsessed with what everyone else is up to - it's an unhealthy obsession and something I escaped from some years ago. Took a big pay cut, started doing what I wanted to do, moved to a house in the country where the deciding factors were the view and area and not the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Let me know when the six month holiday starts, I'll come down to your pub and we can have a glass of urinal beer.

Different countries don't give there people the chance to grow and get richer.
And there basic living standards are crap and here dogs get better treatment in this country
The government here do try to make things easier living here but lots of taxes and living in London comes at a price,
and have a way to go to making people's lives happy in their own country (without people like you stressing about the worlds problems)
Very idealistic thinking but you can't be thinking of the whole world problems because it won't happen your thinking won't change the world because country keep their people poor no matter what the west do to help

Your talking about the past with William the conqueror.....just think 500 years from now we will all be below the poverty line to there standards, and most people are in debt and I haven't taken a vacation in over three years, but I sure you can always donate your money to those in need :), but you need to make a stronger argument because what your backing your reasoning with is just plain stupidity.............

If you mean that literally, you are stupid.

If the grocery store employees all took 6 months off, we would all starve because we don't have 6 moth supply of food in the house.

If the farmers all took 6 months off, we would all starve because the grocery stores do not have 6 months supply of food.

If I took 6 months off work, I would have to do it without pay, because like most people I don't get 6 months paid vacation. I might be able to pay my mortgage for 6 months by spending all my savings, but most people couldn't.

My TV and fridge and phone only take 1% of my money. Food and home and school for my children and health care and saving for the day when I will be too old to work take 99%. Those are not luxuries, they are necessities. That is true for most people.

If you don't mean it literally, if you just mean everyone should give up half their wealth, move to a smaller house, give up the expensive car for a cheaper one, give up the vacation trip and just stay home, just so someone else can get more stuff, then I say that is communism. People get stuff without working for it. That has been proved to not work. In that case, all people just stop working because they don't feel like doing $100,000 worth of work and only getting $50,000 of benefit from it. So everyone just cuts back their effort to that of the laziest worker and everyone gets poorer and not richer.

Doesn't make any sense - it assumes a zero sum game - it assumes that our wealth is related to other countries' poverty, or that our advancement comes at their expense. That's silly, it's like saying you have two bodybuilders and if one takes a holiday from weightlifting the other will get bigger at a faster pace....

poverty is not always about what you have, nowdays we have debts unlike anything known to william the conqueror. i consider myself rich if i can pay the bills, eat good meals, go to an occasional movie and not be in debt.

hey, it took us hundreds of thousands of years to advance as clever as we are. the different animals have the get admission to to supplies as we do. have been the main developed species contained in the worldwide. we are in a position to unravel worldwide warming if we placed our minds to it and save government out.
