This depends on a couple of variables.
I have attached a link to American Airlines for your review. I suggest you surf AA's site for more info.
If you are sitting in first class, you will be offered dinner.
If you are sitting in coach, you will either be offered a free snack (peanuts/chips), a snack for a fee, or a light meal for a fee.
As I travel by air and on American Airlines frequently, unless I was sitting in first class, I would purchase a meal at the airport and either eat it before boarding the plane or once I was airborne. The light snacks and meals just don't "get it".
You did not ask, but depending on the type of plane on which you are traveling, check out seatguru.com to better understand the conditions of your assigned seat.
American has a large fleet of MD - 80's and 83's with a 3-2 seat configuration. Any seat on the two side is better than the 3 side and the seats in the middle to front of the plane are slightly wider than the seats in the rear. Exit rows are a definite plus.
On American's 757's, most of them are former TWA planes. If you can get the bulkhead in row 9 or the window in row 10, you will have an empty space in front of you so you can stretch out a little.
Have a good trip

Probably not. Most flights don't serve anything but soft drinks these days. You can purchase food to take on board once you are in the terminal, but you can't take any with you from home.

on the airlines, I constantly order vegetarian or kosher nutrition that are some distance stronger to what's frequently served. The scientific institution i've got had to spend quite a number of time interior the previous couple of years has replaced their menu with the intention to get hummus, salads, sandwiches, and different products fairly than the nasty institutional fare.

It will say on your reservation confirmation if a meal is provided. A lot of airlines (American included) are charging for most meals now.

Depending on what seat you are, if you fly business or 1st class, they will serve a meal. It also depend on the flight time.
