Rear turn signals are often red. Often they have used the same bulb for turn signal as brake light. In North America, they can be either amber or red. Front turn signals have to be amber since 1968, but most were already amber as of 1963. Before that, they were usually white.

Either color is legal in the US. Mostly it's a cost issue with the manufacturer, nothing else. Personally I prefer the amber ones. If you've ever been behind someone who was using their turn signals at the same time they're pumping their brakes trying to figure out what they were going to do next you know why I prefer the amber.

That would be illegal in europe.
It's one way of limiting the market they can sell to. Quite why they would want to do this, I don't know.
