I'd like to buy my friend a gift card for her belated birthday/new job. What are some good ideas? She's 26 and lives in New England.

Since it's a new job, she might need new work clothes to fit the new company's corporate culture. How about a gift card for a clothing chain

You didn't say what kind of job she will have, but anything for that would be great. Clothes, shoes, a handbag, a gift card for a really close restaurant so she won't starve, a cool lunch bag so she can carry her lunch or snacks to work.
Cool idea: buy an inexpensive lunch carrier, load it with a couple bags of her favorite chips and desserts[like some Fritos, a couple cans of soda, and a couple brownies]. Put a gift card for a local restaurant, for instance, the Subway shop down the street. That way, you cover several bases, she can get a sandwich, already have the chips and dessert, has a bag to carry it in now, and for later.
I have a brand new job, and pack my lunch everyday[there are some restaurants in the area, but they are very expensive]. I would have been thrilled if someone would have made me a lunch, gone to Wal-mart to get me a new lunch sack and packed it with a gift card and munchies! A roll of quarters to feed the soda machine with would have really been good!

My suggestion, since it is past her birthday now and closer to the new job event, to get a nice card congratulating her on her job, or just saying, "congratulation" and then write in what it is for and add a belated Happy Birthday, then sign it and give it to her. She will really appreciate somebody who truly is happy for her! There are too many who would just feel envy and not really be happy for her.

What a great friend you are! Also, late is not too late, it is always nice to know somebody thought of you, regardless if it is on time or not. Good for you, she is lucky to have such a loving and thoughtful friend. Have a great weekend.

You can give her a credit card gift card, so she could use it at any store. Also, a card to a local mall, a spa (or a certificate for a massage) might be nice. How's her schedule going to be like? She might enjoy a card to a nearby restaraunt so she doesn't have a cook as much as she adjusts to her new job. Good luck!

If it's a place where she'll need to dress up, I would do a gift card to a store that sells clothing that she'll need for work. Or maybe a gift cerfiticate to her favorite salon or spa to relax her from the stresses of a new job.
