My 10 year old nephew had it show up twice so far in urine samples. I'm just wondering what could be causing this.

A small amount of protein in the urine may be normal, especially if your nephew is tall, thin and active. In such persons, the urine protein is absent in the first voided morning specimen.

Larger amounts of protein can indicate kidney disease, either in the glomeruli, the many tiny filtering agents in the kidney, or in the kidney tubules. Infection, nephritis, high blood pressure, and other forms of kidney disease may present with proteinuria. If amount of protein is moderate or large and it persists on subsequent tests, your nephew needs an extensive workup to prevent further kidney damage. I hope he is under the care of a good doctor and his parents are conscientious about follow-up

when blood goes through the kidneys, waste is filtered and comes out in the urine. protein is not a waste and should not be found in urine.
tests will have to be run to tell exactly what is causing this to happen.
