Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. Either the tooth is already damaged (and therefore has a chance of becoming infected) or he is trying to prevent infection after the surgery. The later is probably the case if the antibiotics are supposed to continue after the tooth is pulled.
If you don't take it, you have a greater chance of having a nasty infection. If it goes into the space left by the removed tooth, it could get to your blood stream and become a very dangerous situation.

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic. If there is a chance that you have an infection, your dentist is doing the wisest thing. If you have an infection when the tooth is pulled, the infection could, and almost certainly would spread. It will cause an inflammation which can take what seems like forever to get rid of. Also, it will speed the healing process from the extraction by NOT allowing infection to start, in most cases. Good luck, and get the tooth for the Tooth Fairy.

Your dentist probably prescribed the antibiotic to kill any infection if there is any. If an infection in your mouth (especially of a tooth) goes untreated, it may result in the infection moving into your blood sream and settling in your heart. It is very important to make sure you take the antibiotic.

Because you probably have an infected tooth or once it's pulled you will have an open wound in your mouth. Your mouth is full of bacteria and the medicine will prevent infection. Take the meds.

Yes, same thing just happened to my brother. He had a hole in the heart when he was born so he has to take 6 x 500mg Amoxycillin before he has anaesthetic at the dentist to prevent picking up an infection. So I would imagine your doctor has given it to you to prevent any kind of infection.

HELLO ISAAC,
THIS WAS PROBABLY DONE FOR EITHER OF 2 REASONS.
#1 YOU HAVE A PREVIOUS HEALTH HISTORY WHERE YOU NEED TO HAVE ANTIBIOTICS 1 HOUR BEFORE THE EXTRACTION TO PREVENT A POTENTIAL HEART INFECTIONS, OR
#2 YOU HAVE A VERY BADLY INFECTED BROKEN DOWN TOOTH WHICH NEEDS SURGICAL EXTRACTION, AND YOU SHOULD HAVE ANTIBIOTICS FOR IT IN YOUR BODY TO GIVE YOU A HEAD START.
ANTIBIOTICS ARE NOT GIVEN LIKE CANDY OR BREATH MINTS. YOUR DOCTOR WANTS TO BE SURER YOU TAKE THEM AS DIRECTED. OTHERWISE, THIS COULD COMPLICATE YOUR EXTRACTION, AND COULD REQUIRE A HOSPITAL STAY.

Quite a normnal prodecure before surgery,
It gives your body a' head start' in the event an infection might develop.
If you don't take it, you could be letting yourself open for a dangerous infection.
It's an ounce of prevention,

You should take the Amoxicillin prior to your appointment. The Amoxicillin could be for pre-medication or if you have swelling around the tooth it helps to decrease the swelling prior to extraction. Why would you not take it...this is your health.

Amoxyl is a good prophylactic drug to prevent infection. Don't take it after wisdom teeth, and you can end up with even more costs for treatment. Go to http://www.oceansurgical.com.au/ to find out more
