My advice is don't believe it. It is a crock to scare you into being someone other than who you really are, mind control. Simply walk the other way.

If you were a devout Christian for years, then you know that Christianity is more about your relationship with the person of Jesus Christ, then it is about the church organization that you attend. If my church were to start preaching about another god, I still would not lose my faith in Christ.
What you must realize is that what you call devout Christianity has been devout belief in your organization, not devout belief in God, otherwise you would not be losing your faith.
You have some real thinking and soul searching to do. Peace.

It is not oppressive being a Christian. Religion is made of man made rules and regulations that are at times oppressive. You need to be a christian because you want to serve Jesus. By doing that you avoid hell. It is hard sometimes to believe without seeing but that is what faith is all about. You need to be in a non denominational church that doesn't condemn. Don't loose faith. Look in the yellow pages under churches and find a non denominational or church of God. You will be happy there.

You're right, it is cowardly and simple. And you shouldn't believe in that religion for that reason. But neither should you disbelieve it for that reason. Some christians might have the wrong motivation for their beliefs, but they might also have the facts right. You should investigate the truth of Christianity apart from the actions of Christians. Even a hypocrite can be right sometimes.

"Christianity in particular, it's so foolish to me.
I have been a devout christian for years now!"
Did you say a DEVOUT Christian for years? Did you read the Bible for yourself? Have you done any in-depth study on the topics that seem not to make sense to you? Have you compared commentators' thoughts on these topics?
I admit that trying to avoid hell is NOT a good reason for being a Christian; it's a downright bad method!!

you joined a 'religion' Christians don't follow, or beleive in, a 'religion'-we belive in, and follow, Christ ...calling yourself a 'devout christian' may have brought you some temporary comfort and/or sense of 'belonging'... i could call myself 'a devout hockey player for years now', but that doesn't translate into actual skating ability...your lack of understanding of what it means to be a Christian is a pretty good indicator that you were only fooling yourself, because you certainly weren't fooling God

you should not believe in religion. You should have faith in God and have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus His Son. Then you will come to know that knowing God is not ony about escaping hell, it is to get to know the Greatest Person ever. You will come to now His exquisite love for you, the good things he has in store for you, the wealth and riches of his inheritance for you. Your life will become meaningful as you partake in His divine nature.
He will become your reason for living, your everything. His joy will be your strength. He will guide you in your everyday life, opening up your mind as you gain insight into his will.
Suddenly you will realize that you cannot confine him to a sunday-relationship, but that He is a part of everything that you do. He will be in your studies, marriage, job, and every little aspect of your life.
Knowing God surpasses human understanding - it is sheer JOY!

That is precisally why i left christianity a while ago. i am now pagan which i beleive is a more free religion. No one is forced to go to heaven or hell. We all are reborn again as a animal. You do not have to devote to one god and one god only. There is one god and one goddess that created the earth together. And pagans protect their work of art.

Someone has already answered it---- you should not. Religions poison everything... If you have not already, read some fine books on the subject... The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins... on the NY Times Best Seller list all winter. and Why Darwin Matters by a truly good writer, Michael Shermer who describes his journey from a bible thumping Creationist to an Evolutionist... great reading for the bright, educated, and curious

First off you should not believe in a religion, you should believe in a Deity and practice a religion. For me religion tells me how to believe and seem to not be happy with the fact that I do.

It's not cowardly to be afraid of hell - but to become a Christian for only that reason is not right. You become one when you decide that Jesus is your Lord and you're putting him in control of your life
