I know they don't celebrate birthdays or holidays for religious reasons but is there a specific reason why.

Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate birthdays, Christmas, Easter and other holidays because they all have pagan origins. They want to stay clean and they consider that pleasing Jehovah God is the most important thing.

"If, therefore, anyone keeps clear of the latter ones, he will be a vessel for an honorable purpose, sanctified, useful to his owner, prepared for every good work." -- 2 Thimothy 2:21

Jehovah's Witnesses do celebrate things. I am actually going to a graduation party tonight. I celebrate anniversaries and other things too! We also commemorate the death of Christ every year.
We don't celebrate Christmas, birthdays, Halloween...because they are based on pagan holidays and beliefs. They don't have Christian origins. Pick any holiday and google it, you'll see. :) The Bible tells us to stay away from false religion. Celebrating holidays based on false religion isn't applying that command, is it?

, We only celebrate Jesus Death which is called the Memorial
As far as birthdays bible says we r u celebrate the death of Jesus Luke 22:19,20.. And as far as birthdays goes there were only two birthdays that were celebrated and that is the Birthday of Pharaoh In Gen sis 40:20. And during his birthday there was murder that was committed The Pharaoh hung his baker for no reason. And the last birthday that was celebrated was that of Herod, during his birthday he asked his daughter "whatever you want, and I will give it to you" Mark 6:21-29. She asked for the Head of John the baptist. John the Baptist was beheaded. In essence of these birthday parties brings calamity. There r fights, drunks, etc. But we do celebrate Grad, anniversaries. We do not celebrate Halloween, Christmas, Easter Etc Those r based on pagan beliefs

we are not brainwashed. we have free will. we are not a cult as many keep saying. a cult worships man we worship Jehovah. we do celebrate. we celebrate our anniversary and the most important day is Jesus Christ memorial which is every year on Nisan 14, we celebrate it in 236 lands. Jesus said to do this not his birth. since Jesus died on the last supper or the passover and since passover is once a year, that is when we celebrate it.

Why do any Christian religions require or prohibit anything? Because of their particular way of cherry-picking the bible.

All claim that they embrace the entire bible, of course, but that is simply impossible, since it is contradictory on just about every theological principle. So what you end up with is whatever you want, then you embrace the supporting scriptures, and explain away all the contradictory ones.

edit: I hate to be the one to tell you, Mabes, but if you celebrate Easter you are celebrating an occasion based on a pagan holiday as well.

it is NOT their fault, they are programmed. known as the "full of crap" syndrome. once brainwashed, an individual has no idea on how to evaluate life or faith without the control of their spiritual leadership, especially when directed to follow ridiculous external laws.
