ive been told by a friend that "it is not compulsory to indicate when driveing, its just curtesy of the road." is he correct?

If you prepare to make a turn, then you SHOULD turn on the turn indicator. If there are no other drivers near, I do not.

In some places, it is LAW, and then you must. You will have to check local laws.

No he is incorrect by all means of the term.

Signaling is mandatory everywhere in the US. Every state has on its law books fines for NOT signaling while changing directions in a moving vehicle, whether it be turns or lane changes.
Even in a vehicle (motorized or not) that has no signals or they are broken require the use of hand signals legally.

You will get away with it most of the time but why bother, be the better person, be courteous, be smarter than your friend, signal, it could save yours or someone else's life.

No, your friend is not correct. It is a courtesy to be sure, but is also the rule of the road.

If your friend drives, how the hell did they pass the test?? If they dont, why are you taking driving advice from them?
