The word homo is Latin for "human", chosen originally by Carolus Linnaeus in his classification system. It is often translated as "man", although this can lead to confusion, given that the English word "man" can be generic like homo, but can also specifically refer to males. Latin for "man" in the gender-specific sense is vir, cognate with "virile" and "werewolf". The word "human" is from humanus, the adjectival form of homo.
In modern taxonomy, Homo sapiens is the only extant species of its genus, Homo. Likewise, the ongoing study of the origins of Homo sapiens often demonstrates that there were other Homo species, all of which are now extinct. While some of these other species might have been ancestors of H. sapiens, many were likely our "cousins", having speciated away from our ancestral line.

There is not yet a consensus as to which of these groups should count as separate species and which as subspecies of another species. In some cases this is due to the paucity of fossils, in other cases it is due to the slight differences used to classify species in the Homo genus. The Sahara pump theory provides an explanation of the early variation in the genus Homo.
Did you know this..?

I never once referred to homo sexuality. Clearly most religious folk will only see what suits their paranoid and ignorant little minds..

Biologically we are approx 98% dna-similar to apes apparently, so I guess the Homo Sap speciation makes sense biologically. As a christian I know however that there is a supernatural aspect to life - God, angels, spirits etc. Some people who mess with occult and New Age probably also are aware that we are more than just animals, and there are non-biological persons including the Almighty in existence.
I'd certainly be interested to see about archaic dna still in the human genome. Presumably as they build up databases and investigate in the next 20 years they are going to find some. I wonder for instance where the oriental look comes from. Also maybe there is some neanderthal DNA in Indo-Europeans. A Guy at my school (years ago) had eyebrow ridges just like a neanderthal (actual even more pronounced!) They must have come out by 1/4 inch from his forehead.

It isn't the term "homo" I question.
It is the term "sapiens".
"Wise man"...yeah, right. Rather an arrogant title, don't you think? Most of the species don't qualify...
And you tell us that there were other Homo species, all of which are now extinct.
Could you give us the source of this information? I mean, has anyone found any of these cousins of ours?
They speciated away from our ancestral line...umm...they "devolved"??
Please, provide more information on the rest of the family.
Sis and I are planning a family reunion...
EDIT:
It seems as if most of the folks who clicked on your question think you are trying to build some sort of case for homosexuality.
I don't see that in your question...
Unless we are all thinking below the belt, here?
Did I miss something??
Told you "sapiens" was a mis-nomer....

I'm not sure why the first responder got so many thumbs down... all he did was answer the question at hand. Perhaps it was his tendency to ramble on a bit in a semantically null manner... And great question it is, by the way. I've often wondered about this potential conflict. Thanks for asking it. Jay Z: Theological perspective dictates whether or not these two principles are "contradictory premises". Many Christians believe in both Evolution and Creationism. Mormons are a great example, they just aren't Young Earth Creationists.

I just lone the way they censor Homo, ass, ***** and dick.
The words mean human or same, a equine family member, a cat, and the short form of Richard.
Freedom of speech my anus.
Also Homosexual is not from the same root as Homosapiens. In the first sense it means sameness just like in the word Homogenized as applied to milk or other mixed materials. Notice that they allow it if you do not leave a space.
I might even be able to refer to a Seagull as what it is, a "shithawk".
Oh, by the way, as a homosapien I have no problem at all with some of my ancesters being apes or whatever.

The Bible answers the other Homo species, because the sons of God came into the daughters of men and men of renown were on the earth with giants.
David killed the last of their kind as the Bible describes. These fallen angels left their original abode and man became so violent and wicked that God destroyed the original group by way of the Flood of Noah.
Look around and you will see their return. Lawlessness and sin abounds. You just don't have any dead fossils of them as yet.

It doesn't matter what the root of the word means, I still believe it to be immoral.
For instance do you know the Greek root porno (hence pornography) literally means "evil". Should it be outlawed because of this root word?
By the way, being a Creationist has nothing to do with considering homosexuality immoral.

While the sun is about 400 times larger than the moon, the moon is also approximately 400 times closer to the earth, so that both objects extend nearly identical angular sizes of about ½ degree. This causes a total solar eclipse to be a very remarkable event, one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring experiences in nature, as anyone who has seen one can attest. The design argument in astronomy can be very powerfully explained.

We don't 'disagree' with being H. Sapiens. We do, however have a problem with H. Sexual Activity. Is that what you were actually referring to?
