I'm going on a vacation soon and making a stop for a night in Canada with some friends. I know they recently changed things and there are new rules for crossing the border. You have to have more than just an ID now...do I have to have a passport or just a birth certificate...and I haven't been to the border since I was little...what can I expect?

If you are driving, or any travel other than flying, you need your birth certificate and drivers license. If you fly you need to have applied for a passport, but because of backlog of applications you don't even need to received it yet.

The rules are constantly changing, the above is good for this summer. Sometime next year they expect to require a passport for all situations.

Here is a link with the basics on what to expect.

Juan B is almost right, crossing into Canada via ship (like on a cruise) also requires a passport.

Make sure the official copy of your birth certificate has a raised seal, and that you also have a government- issued photo ID. (usually your drivers license is fine - make sure it has a photo.)

At 15 you would be seen a minor. consequently, alongside collectively with your valid passport, you will require a signed notarized letter of permission from the two your mum and dad/guardians. there may be different standards such as you offering evidence of adequate funds to your pass to or exhibiting which you have supplemental wellbeing care. i'm no longer announcing those are confident standards for a pass to love yours in spite of the shown fact that it particularly is to signify that border guards could ask. in all probability no longer yet who can tell recently besides?
