Anyone can lie. You don't HAVE to swear on a Bible any more. Swearing to tell the truth is just a tradition. There's no magic way to tell if you are lying or not, but it usually can be found out by other witnesses, etc.

I have been called to jury duty several times, and have been an observer in a civil case once, and not ONCE did I see a bible being used for the swearing in. I don't think this is practiced in most court rooms.
Anyway, ANYONE, could lie, theist, non-theist, pantheist or apatheist, all across the spectrum.
A good liar needs a good memory. A good cross examination can un cover many inconsistencies.
Then there is the threat of being charged with perjury.

As a Christian I have never understood the practise or origin of the practise of swearing on the bible. As Jesus himself said not to swear oaths neither by heaven or earth. He said simply let your yes be yes and your no be no. Anything else comes from the evil one. So again I find the practise of oath swearing somewhat of a mystery. But to make blanket assessments about groups of people because some have lied is more a reflection of the simplistic worldview they have adopted. Let us pray these so call open minded ones never grease a juror's seat if we are ever on trial.

There is a large order to life , things follow this order , Always ,,, however once in a great great great while something falls out of order, but that happens so infrequently, that money could be bet on an outcome , I wouldn't bet my life on it but ... the order is just the basic laws of life , If you go to the store you've got a reason , what ever the reason , boredom, or because you need a tool, what ever,, that is the true reason you came, some one who is lieing doesn't usualy understand this order , NO NEED , so unfolding the order for them is a mess , and the mess is what you see , not the lie...

As a Christian, if I went to court I would ask to take the affirmation. I would refuse to swear an oath as the Bible tells us that our word should be our bond ... it is for me. Yes should be yes and no should be no.
We are not supposed to swear by Heaven (the abode of God) or by Earth (the footstool of God) and it goes without saying that you don't invoke God in an oath.

I believe there is an atheistic declaration now, same as you can choose to swear on a different holy book. People still lie though
This makes interesting reading, but I am sure it is no longer the case,

Of course some people lie. Did John Wayne Gacy lie? He was a Deacon in his church.
I was in a courtroom last month for a divorce of my friend. When the oath was taken there was no bible and the word God was not used. I was very happy.
It was a small town too in east Texas. Hempstead, Texas.
