I've heard of people asking for huge amounts of child support per month, and I start to wonder if all that money is really for the child or for something else. I honestly feel that there are some people out there that abuse the system. Thoughts?

Have to agree with you completely. There are some parents that do spend the money on supporting the kids by purchasing clothes, food, necessities of life etc. But there are far too many that spend the child support on good times for themselves by going to casino's, bingo halls, bars and some on illegal substances. Sad that the system allows this too happen but that is the way some people abuse the system.

Being the previous receiver of child support payments myself, I know alot of money goes into raising a child that people don't really think about. Some of them being food, clothing, doctor visits, medical supplies/first aid supplies, utilities, laundry soap, health & beauty supplies, gasoline, extra curricular activities, entertainment... the list goes on.

However, I do believe there should be a set amount per child per area (certain areas of the country have higher costs of living). I don't think it takes hundreds of dollars weekly to raise a child. I also think this figure should be split equally between the two people who brought the child into the world since it takes two to make a child (in most circumstances).

Alot of people do abuse the system, unfortunately. I know of some mothers and fathers who decide not to work, however they are completely capable, just to get away with not paying. They are after every penny they can get and seem to forget their responsibilites to the situation. They seem to forget the focus should be on the child.

On the other hand, there are some people who know the other makes more money than them and try to suck every extra cent they can - whether it is needed for the child or not.

The sad thing is - the courts let people get away with too much, especially if they do not like one of the parties.

And, yes, I do know that each situation is different. I just wish people would start focusing on the children and not themselves and their pocketbooks.

Just my thoughts per your question.

Child support goes to the care and upkeep of the child(ren) and not directly to the child. Child support is based on the income of the non-custodial parent and not on what it takes to raise that child. Of course there are some custodial parents that ask for and are granted astronomical amounts of child support. There absolutely abuse of the system. I saw it first hand at the grocery store this afternoon!

I think that if the child has a roof over it's head, food to eat, clothes to wear, and toys to play with... then yes it doesn't matter if the child support check is used specifically for those things as long as the child has them. The reason that some people pay alot is because they make alot the more you make the more you spend on your lifestyle so that has the same trickle effect for the child.

Depends on the amount of money involved. I think that it would typically take $500 to $1000 per month to raise a child. The amount increases on a diminishing basis.

I think without a doubt the poorer you are the more you get scrooded! from a mans point of view, who can support two households but the court does not give a**** about how you are supposed to get by. but if it is really being used for the right reason you have nothing to complain about you need to support your kids and if you are really taking the time to be with them the question would always be answered for you.

It does, in the form of food, shelter and clothing....and school supplies, doctor co-pays, extra activities that they want to do like going to the movies, or a friends birthday party.......

My ex makes more than I do BUT...hes paid the exact same amount for 10 years in child support.

I have full custody of the kids, he has visitation and can see them anytime he wants to. He chooses to be absent from their life because...well, I don't know why. He lives not five minutes away and only shows up occassionally. He doesn't *parent* as in make decisions about school, doctors...life in general.....thats HIS choice.....I inform him of every school activity, softball/football game...and he chooses to not come and morally support the kids......I inform him about every doctors appointment, when, where etc....he chooses to not come and morally support the kids......

I think you get the point.....I at least hope you do....

Do you have any idea what it costs to raise a child? Everyone I know that gets child support, first of all doesn't get huge amounts and secondly uses it to raise their child.

No, but it may pay the bills on the home provided , and that is what it is for, not a bunch of toys and things that the child won't play with, things that it doesn't need. Support is, necessities, not to be thrown away on twinkies, if that's what you mean.
