i mean going back to iraq.....they kill themselves or hire a hitman to shot them so they cannot return.

there was a soldier here at one rochester ny colleges saying they would rather kill themselves then go back.

then yesterday inside editon had a soldier hire a hitman to shot him in the leg so he would not have to go back.

THINK IF YOU DI NOT WANT TO SERVE IN THE WAR WHY DID YOU SIGN UP FOR THE MILITARY IN THE FIRST PLACE?

and getting really sick and tired of seeing stories like that you dishonoring military members

this is for all who is critizing my question you are all wrong about the view point. i had a friend who wanted to serve in iraq and killed by a roadside bomb for his follow men. he saved them all for the sake them and himself. that is honest to god the most honorable thing you can do instead of coming home and do **** to yourself instead of wanting to go back. if you hear on some unliberal news they want to go back and they wanted to do it for the sake of iraqi freedom and the love for their country. SO PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME I DO NOT KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. GOD BLESS USA MILITARY.

Funny question... looks like lots of peeps took it personally... anyways just to add creditability on what i am about to say... first off i am currently in the military and have deployed twice... as far as how "bad" war is... to be honest the only thing that really sucked were the living conditions, being away from family, and all the poverty i witnessed... i felt very safe the men i deployed with to include myself were very well trained... i do not believe war is evil but that it is a profession that adds value to this nation... if you don't believe that go learn German and pretend we didn't intervene with WW2.. anyways back to the question... i know Soldiers that have done things similar to this (attempt to gouge eye) and i do not feel at all dishonored nor are they dishonored in my eyes... what we do is an occupation.. smile and be happy with our wages.. that's what Ive learned... most of the the reasons Ive seen were Soldiers didn't want to go home were because of some issue left unresolved at home... like 1st child births, wife leaving, family illnesses, etc only on the news do you see that 1 in a 100,000 scenario snapshot of the war.. usually negative to demonize soldiers and what we are doing overseas... what i do is I pray for them... if the military is not for them i hope they find something that is.. all i can do is show up.. we do appreciate all support we can get though... if i had an option to choose wether or not to deploy again to iraq i would choose NO... i am fighting a big enough battle at home providing for my wife and child...

Starting off, I just want to say that a large piece of me died in Iraq. I lost my humanity, all of it. I'm what you would probably call a sociopath. Not because I chose to be, no I remember the days when I could connect with people, when my feelings actually functioned properly. I yearn for those days. I can no longer connect with my wife the way I was able to before the war, and for most of us it's the same across the board.

Just because you knew somebody that died means nothing. I personally know 7 people that died. I was there when some of them died, I physically watched my best friend expire. For you to call someone cowardly, or say they are dishonoring their country isn't American. Unless YOU are serving, you have no right to judge those who every day wake up before the sun rises and run 3-5 miles, by the time most Americans get up the average Soldier/Marine/Airman/Sailor has done more than that typical American will do all day, some perhaps all week.

To get to the point, Iraq is an omen to a lot of us. I fear no death, but I fear Iraq. It makes me a person that I don't want to be, and most people I know agree. I did things I would never speak of, things I am deeply ashamed of. Nothing illegal, but things that a normal, moral human being wouldn't do.

Out of my entire platoon, not a single person would have flinched to pull a trigger, to expire a life. I speak not just of terrorists, but ordinary Iraqi civilians. Iraq puts a lot of people in a place mentally that most of us can't come back from.

I miss my humanity, and you can say whatever you want, I'd never go back to Iraq. I refuse to become that person again, or to see people become that person again. Ever.

There is no limit to what people will do to be happy and avoid things they find unpleasant, War is no different. As to what i think of the ones that do this is really unimportant.

However they chose to avoid the contract they signed will be what they have to live with the rest of their lives. If it does not bother them then i guess at this point it is okay with me.

UCMJ (military judicial system) will take care of them.

We THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE ( the government, which we all are) Have set our society to a new thinking pattern which does not require you to be responsible any longer.
It is thought better that you make excuses and blame everyone else for your poor choices. So rather than pay the piper you can hire a lawyer and with them and the media you can win your war against the war.

It is no longer about Honor, Morals, Tradition, Country, Pride, (Just to name a few) It is now about self expression, and i wanna do over, I wanna free ride!

So we can sit a criticize all we want but it will not change anything until WE THE PEOPLE fix it.

Just my two cents worth

Research Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. If they went to Iraq one time, they are a hero in my mind. And if it weren't for them signing up in the first place, you might be there with a draft. So, in a way, they signed up in the first place so you didn't have to go.

Now, what some of these people do afterwards might not be legal or a great idea - but, think about if you were in a major car wreck on a small road and almost died or the person sitting next to you died. Would you ever drive on that road again? How far would you go to not drive on that road ever again?

I feel bad for them. They can't figure out how to get out of the military without doing something stupid and desperate. They are probably in need of mental health care.

I also feel bad for anyone who will use a single example like this to generalize what all soldiers think. There could be any number of reasons why they don't want to deploy. Personal situations are always in a state of flux, and anything could happen.

The military isn't for everyone. Some don't realize this until after they join up.

Although I didnt see the Inside edition you mentioned, I bet alot of these men are actually boys. As for why they are joining the military, Its probably a combination of things e.g. they think its cool, wanting to impress people, they think its like a video game, the signing bonus they get for enlisting, etc. But then reality hits once they get in combat and they see what the deal really is... Well sometimes a desperate man will do desperate things, especially if they have a young wife or baby at home. Im not saying its right, but neither is this war, and who knows what any of us would do in their situation.

If you signed up for a job and you wanted to quit you would... If they said you couldn't quit and you TRULY hated the job, wouldn't you jeopardise your career a little (turn up late a few times, not meet your deadline)?
The soldiers don't really have a choice in the matter, so if this is all they can do then give them a break - and it's only a select few anyway when you look at how many people are over there...

your are right that they are dishonoring themselves and our country. but you also have to think about why some of them are going to such extremes. first soldiers sign up for a certain number of years, but because of the war the government is forcing them to go beyond what the signed up for. it is called a "stop loss" and they are not getting the time home they usually get like they are supposed to be able to stay home for like a year or something before going back some are only getting like 6 months.

One tour of duty in Iraq should be enough sacrifice per soldier. During the Vietnam War, the soldiers were required to serve one 12 month period. Plus they were given time off for R and R. Maybe it is time to reinstate the draft so no soldier has to serve more than one 12 month period in Iraq. It sad when any soldier gets killed in Iraq, but when you hear he got killed during the his extension time, that is so very sad for his family.

Possibly these men and women have seen first hand what a stupid senseless war this is. Created by Bush, for Bush, and for big business.

I do not dishonor these people.. half of them were in the forces just for the education they were promised. A lot were in because they thought they were homeland security.. who usually do not go overseas to fight. Bush was Homeland. or something like that.. he never fought.. he barely served.

I cannot fault these men and women for at least wanting to die on their own soil.. for their own reasons.Dying for ones country may be considered an honor.. dying for a selfish president is not.

And for those of you who criticize.. walk a mile in their shoes before saying anything. We do not really know what it is like.. the fear of being blown up at every turn.. we have no room to say anything unless we have done it ourselves.
