It doesn't matter whether a scientist is religious or not - when s/he is doing science religion cannot be involved by definition. Einstein was hardly religious in a traditional sense and spoke of "god" only metaphorically (and mostly to keep the nuts off his back). Today 90% of scientists are atheists, because they deal with reality on a daily basis; eventually it sinks in that nature is all there is.
Before the invention of writing religion may have been useful as a unifying force, although it undoubtedly punished anyone who asked too many questions as viciously as the later versions have done, and continue to do. After the invention of writing and the recording of "holy scripture" as it was at that time, religion stopped evolving with society and continues to lag behind new knowledge and morality; let's hope that eventually it will be so out of touch with life the way it actually is that it will fade away once and for all.
So the answers to your question are none and all, respectively.

Has society really advanced? I'm questioning your premise on which the question is based.
For example, why spend billions of dollars to go to the moon? And yes, why spend billions of dollars to subsidize U.S. farmers when there are people in the U.S. who are starving? When this subsidy give the U.S. farmers a global advantage over other farmers in say, Africa? And to prevent the spreading of aids? If people would only obey the commandment that says no sex except with your spouse.
Advance in medical science? About 20 years ago the Hunzas were discovered at the foot of the Himalayas. Men 120 years old were the norm and they were very active. Today, with Western civilizations, that society had drastically deteriorated.
And I could go with numerous examples. And yes, Old Testament patriarchs lived nearly 1000 years.
And how do you explain ooparts?

All advances in society can be attributed to religion (God ), because He made us with the intelligence to study our world and make things to help ourselves.
It took science quite awhile to advance to the Biblical laws about cleanliness, actually. Unlike the nations around them, the ancient Israelites had to go through a cleansing process after touching sick people or dead bodies, they had to go to the bathroom far from their camp and bury it, they had to be quarantined if sores didn't heal, etc. God's laws protected them from many of the diseases the other nations contracted.

Science - Medicine that has doubled our lifespan and reduced infant mortality to a rare occurence. The technology that brings you these words and lets you read them. Global transportation. Air conditioning. Too many advances to name.
Religion - State-of-the-art witch burning techniques. Some very interesting and unending wars. Clever techniques for getting widows to gladly surrender their social security check to a rich stranger.

Hi,
Don't throw stones in a glass house because you'll be embarrassed. You claim to be smart by the question you ask, but it shows just how ignorant you really are. All law in this United States and much of Europe is based on the Biblical laws, and that my friend is just the beginning. Before you step up to the plate to play ball again, I suggest you bring a bigger bat to play with! ; ) Oh yeah.... your Science has brought us to the brink of nuclear destruction, and that is really really smart don't you think? Play Ball!

Religion controls the masses into a "civilized" society, which is good as long as there is a good leader in place.
Science gave us clean drinking water which is one of the major reasons our lifespan is as long as it is.

Great scientists like Johannes KEPLER saw God's magnificance and constantly gave praise to God Almighty for his wonderful laws built into nature. He was a creationist.
So was Isaac NEWTON.......and he wrote 1 million words about his LITERAL belief in the Scripture. He was a creationist.
" I have a fundamental belief in the Word of God....I study the Bible daily". - Isaac Newton
The electromagnetic equations of James Clerk Maxwell attest to the Magnificant mathematical inginuity of the Creator.
He was a Creationist.
Louis Pasteur...was a avid Christian and Fundamental Bible believer....
Thousands of other scientists freely admit it was their faith in God and Jesus Christ that led them to great discoveries...
