I was dreaming that I was on the moon, and carrying 'Irving' the cat and he was talking to me and he sounded very intelligent.

What a lovely dream!
The moon frequently symblizes things that are not conscious or things that are from the "dark side" of humanity, such as monsters (werewolf and the full moon, for instance).
Irving, your wise and talking cat, is a symbolic guide to unknown areas in your psyche. Fortunately for you, Irving sseems to be a trusted ally, not a monster (like a werewolf).
This dream makes me think of Homer, the spiritual guide in Dante's Inferno. In both instances, the "dreamer" travels a previously uknown and mysterious realm with the assistance of a knowledgeable guide.
If you have another dream and the cat's name changes to Homer, (or the wise friend turns into Homer Simpson) then you KNOW I'm right and you have to give ME the best answer!!!
