Before I answer the question may I ask why lightening? That is something you make less heavy or paler in colour. Many people seem to spell it similarly. Surely it is lightning.
Lightning comes first, then thunder . the sound is the effect of the electrical charge passing through the air .

Yep, they both happen at the same time, you just see the lightening before you hear the thunder

They do NOT occur simultaneously. The lightning must take place first. As soon as that lightning is there, the heat needed to start the air collisions (thunder) does its thing. This is almost the same time, but maybe a tiny fraction of a millisecond later.

They both happen at the same time. It's just that you see lightning first. Thunder is caused by the air around the lightning being super heated and expanding at the speed of sound.

They both occure the same time, but light travels faster than sound, so we see the lightning before we hear the sound.
The time lapse between the lightning, and the thunder, indicates how far away it is.

I didn't think this was a joke, sorry if I got it wrong.
