When I was 9, my mum got me the first HP book.. first few pages we read.. and my dad said he'd burn it.
When I look back i'm glad..you have that evil book in your home and your inviting evil into your home - as crazy as that sounds..it's true.
I wouldn't go near them..
1. they're fantasy - waste of precious time
2. I don't wanna fill my head with rubbish, wanna fill my head with comforting, peaceful thoughts..preferably about God.
3. Don't have the time anyway :)

Have read the first few and enjoyed them but just go to pictures to keep up with the story now. My sons are mad for Harry Potter, im a Christian and i really dont see what people have got against the books. They are about a fictitious character and his life in a fictional world. I even pre-ordered copies for my sons so they got them this morning and if i had any reservations you can be assured i wouldnt have done this.
I really despair of people nowadays, some of them seem to kick up a fuss about the most silly things. It was the same with the Dan Brown Da vinci code outcry, im a roman catholic and really enjoyed da vinci code as a good bit of fiction. Come on, they are make believe and if they think people are so easily swayed by reading a book then their faiths could not have been so strong in the beginning.
I have enjoyed the potter series so far and would advise you to give them a go they are entertaining, a bit of make-believe in this mad world is just what most of us need.
Some of these people would gladly burn all books and take us back to the dark ages so lets not have the narrow minded win and use our own instinct about things. If you are not sure, wait a while and decide then if you want to read them. Your relationship with Christ is personal to you and only you know if you would be comfortable reading material you obviously have reservations about at the moment.
May Christ be with you, you do whatever you want and dont be swayed by others (including me)

I don't read them because I don't choose to spend my time reading magical fantasy books. I have more important things to do. However I know some people from my church who really like Harry Potter books. Each person has to be fully convinced in their own mind about whether or not those books are appropriate for them to read. They also should have knowledge of what the Bible teaches on the subjects presented in those books so that they don't get led astray but merely enjoy them as fantastic tales.

I read the first two out of curiosity. I am not young so, of course, I was not influenced by them. They were "cute" books. I am not real conservative so didn't mind reading about the wizardry even though I don't believe in it.
I know a Christian woman who is a wonderful mother (one of the best I have seen). She has allowed her 12 year old to read them. The girl loves them and does not seem influenced by them. This is a very intelligent (tested way above her grade level) girl who has a strong Christian background and does not seem unduly influenced by the books.
I do not know what I would do if I had children, though.

They are wonderful, fanciful books abotu the eternal struggle of good versus evil. Right wing, self righteous nut jobs might like to pick on them because they are about magic, but most of these same people have no issue with Snow White, Aladin, Cinderella, or any number of other, older stories about magic. Honestly most of the people complaining the loudest have never even read the books so what do they know anyway? (several of them have posted below, and Iwould ask all of them to take a look in the mirror... You've got a plank just there...)
They are just fine and you should not feel guilty in the least for enjoying them.

Yes, I do, and though I would not recommend any of the movies for children under 12, I think that in a family where there is discussion and openness about thoughts and feelings and life issues and the consciences of the children have been formed by the Word of Truth(The Bible) then they are harmless and interesting fiction.
If conversely you are too busy to take time with your kids to form Christian thinking they could be a dangerous opening for the evil one. Much like marijuana is a gateway drug to more dangerous things.

I read the first 3 or 4. She's a good writer. It doesn't sound like proseltyzing for witchcraft, so I don't know how it appeals to different sensibilities. I"m a senior, and kids stuff today is a lot rougher than it was back in the 50's

Those books are absolutely fiction. Just because they are based on magic, witches, and wizards doesn't mean it's morally wrong to take part in reading them. That's just like saying I'm not going to watch a certain movie because there's violence and nudity in it. I bet those same people who have opposing views about Harry Potter partake in other fiction interest. Those people just want something trivial to argue about. I bet those people aren't arguing about the more serious problems this world has. Plus, it's their OPINION. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I actually enjoy Harry Potter and I find it harmless. What, do you think those people with the opposing viewpoints think people are going to run around in cloaks and wands performing spells on people lol? Those people clearly have no lives.

Why is this only aimed toward Christians?
There is nothing wrong with the book. It's fictional. It doesn't promote any form of wickedness in the real life, so why all this bologna of the books casting evilness upon society. Ugghhh....
If Hary Potter is so "evil" then why aren't any other books dealing with magic "evil" either. Just because someone is a wizard/warlock or a witch doesn't make them a Satanist. All a wizard is is a male human that can perfom magic, and a witch is a female human that can perform magic. The biased medias have given corrupt meanings to these words over time, affecting society with biased opinions.

www.saintsalive.com goto libery then to general:
this is the info you will find that will tell you about the occult in Harry (potty mouth) Potter besides witchcraft/Wicca:
Among the terrifying images in books two and three were: a disembodied voice repeatedly hissing "kill"; monstrous, flesh-eating spiders; children being attacked and paralyzed; and an apparently dead cat hung upside down by its tail (USA Today, June 15, 2000).
In book four of the series (Goblet of Fire) the evil character named "Wormtail" cuts up Harry’s arm to extract blood in order to bring "Voldemort" (the most evil character) back to life. (This is an occult practice done to supposedly pass mystic power from one person to another during some occult rituals.) Rowling called Voldemort a "raging psychopath, devoid of the normal human responses to other people’s suffering . . ." (Entertainment Weekly, #554, August 11, 2000). Also in the latest epic, Harry’s parents, who have been killed, have to be extracted from Voldemort’s magic wand
Its important to realize that their are also spells in the book as well and they work when used in the context of witchcraft.

Harry Potter gloifies Wicca, which is just a pretty name for witchcraft. God tells us to have nothing to do with sorcery and the like. I have no desire to learn about witchcraft. why do you think it is so popular? Satan has his hand in it, and I want no part of it. I never let my kids read the books or watch the movies. Just look at everyone who does! They are like nuts about it. That should tell you something. Have nothing to do with it! God Bless
