If you choose to take the vehicle to the dealer, the service department will need the vin number and proof you're the owner of the vehicle and run the vin on the Volkswagen Information system computer. Now, because your vehicle was built before 1995, they may or may not be able to give you a key code. Prior to 1995 or so, key codes were not always entered into the Volkswagen information system.

My suggestion is that you remove the door handle (which contains the lock cylinder) which is easily done; remove the screw that holds the handle in place on the door jamb surface area of the door (its a phillips screw) then push the handle back to remove it. A locksmith can impression a key; charges will vary depending upon hourly rate; where I'm at they charge $15.00 for the first key, then $5.00 to cut the second copy from the impressioned one.

Hope this helps, a car nut.

VW should have the codes. They list them in a book that list the VIN number and the code that was used to cut the key. You may have to take the title to the dealership, since they don't like giving out the information to anyone. You never know when someone is trying to steal a car. good luck.

NO, go to a lock shop and they will fix the doors to work with the ignition key for a whole lot less!
