My iMac's software seems to be going crazy. Sometimes it randomly erases characters (For example, it won't show "W"s on a webpage.) and sometimes seems to put in random backspaces so that words overlap. It's done this in Safari, Firefox, Opera and Preview (in a PDF). Oddly, this has happened on another iMac of mine, too. Relaunching the troublesome application seems to help, but normally only fixes the problem for less than a minute. This is driving me crazy. Please help!

Since your problem seems to be across several programs it may be related to a "permissions" error or to fragmentation of the hard drive.

Periodically, you should run the utility Disk Utility. It will repair any file and folder permissions. This is in the folder Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Launch this then choose the OS hard drive in the left column and click on "Repair Permissions." It will take a few minutes to up to 5 minutes to complete the task. Afterwards, close all applications and restart the computer.

If this does not repair the problem, obtain Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro 4 and follow their instructions to analyze and repair the OS-Boot hard drive.

I hope this helps!

Wow, 3 Mac bashers wasting your time. Of course you already know they are just jealous of you for having 2 Macs.

If you have such an odd issue on 2 computers, it must be related to some software you have installed on both of them. Restart holding the shift key until you see the words "Safe boot". If you don't see those words, restart again holding shift and look for the words. Then see if the problem goes away. If it does, you can follow steps in various forums and on the Apple support site about removing the troublesome software or contact the company that made the software for their help in getting it off your computers.
