Two major things cause this--they're far away enough from a food source to use a bathroom in someone else's yard, and it's often a factor with the height of the grass.

They prefer going with the grass taller than normal so they can 'cover' even if it does lay there looking completely in the open.

When it happens here, I just mow the lawn (after picking up the poop with a trowel). They don't do it again till the lawn is over 4" tall.

You can put a bowl of food out for them - dry food- and they'll move one more yard over to do their business. I think even offering a bowl of water will keep them from going to the bathroom in the surrounding 50 or 60 feet and should solve your problem.

If you don't see a cat pooping, and it SMELLS to high heaven, it may actually be a raccoon doing it. If the poop is full of seeds, it's a possum. They like to use the same spot over and over, too. If it's one of these two animals instead, you won't see any results from mowing or offering a water bowl.

Get your own cat. Without a resident cat your garden has become a disputed territory. Alternastivelt get an ultrasonic cat repellant or some lion dung pellets.

It will not help you to get rid of the cats permanently, but you may water the grass - cats are not too fond of water.
