There is power in numbers. They also have no choice to join the Military, where ours is all volunteer.
But i think our technology still puts the USA as the most powerful....hooah!

I think China military power is not yet at the level like US, however, they do not want to be either. They are truly concentrating in building their economy, while many other countries are doing the arm race. China only spend a small fraction of their huge GDP on modernizing their army...which is really obsolete. Like Gordon Brown from UK said...the strength of a country is not measured by its military might.

See the following link for military expenditure for various countries. China is spending a little less than 10% of what US did. US is really "squandering American tax money" on the arm race. Just imagine if the US government spend as much as the Chinese, and spend the rest on the American people, all American like us....won't we all be very happy? We might get better public schools, lower gas price, lower groceries price, better fuel efficient cars, more research funding, cheaper college tuition, etc.

The Chinese have learned from all the invasions they faced. I seriously doubt if anyone would dare invade today. They did send their Navy around the world w/o leaving behind a single ship recently, for the first time. They did launch a Manned rocket into space. They did shoot a satellite. They do have Nukes. They do have experienced troops. They made it into the WTO. They did assimilate HK w/o firing a shot. They are not afraid of retaking Taiwan, they proved that again and again.

A traditional ground war would not be adviseable under almost any circumstances. Like the late Curtis LeMay suggested,"Bomb them back to the stone age and we won't have to worry about them for a thousand years."

The Chinese nuclear delivery systems will eventually come on line. We will need the missile defense system to be operational by then or we'll have to face some nasty hits here in the States. I don't doubt we'd prevail (assuming our politicians don't cave in) but it'll be mean casualties.

The Chinese military has shown absolutely no ability to sustain operations anywhere but within China. Real military power is about logistics. You do the math.

Some guy wrote about them invading America. That's a laugh. They can't invade Taiwan and its only 100 miles off shore.

China has a one million man army. Plus another million in reserve. They could invade the USA with half that number.
China also has more tanks and more armored troop carriers.
No one really knows how many nukes they have but I have read they have many. China also owns lots of the $9 trillion debt ran up by Bush and the Republicans in Congress. I think they would like to get paid.

For now, it is more hype. The Chinese still are trying to figure a way to get Taiwan without getting the Americans upset.

I'm not sure if they are really powerful but they have been putting a lot of money into building their military power. Few months ago, they developed the capability to shoot satelites out of space.

As I said on a different question, since China has no logistical tail, any conventional war would pretty much be result of US invasion of China. China has the advantage at home.

if numerical numbers make you powerful then yes they are powerful. however at has been proves more than once in the past that numbers do not guarantee a win on the battlefield. i for one think that the US military, and the UK's military or both more powerful than China's
