Can you put shades on a chandelier if the existing glass shades...?

....face upwards, instead of the usual downwards?
We have a chandelier in our home which has glass shades/bowls and I want to make it a little contemporary by putting shades. I can't sit the shades directly on the convex shaped bulbs, can I?

I don't know if you can switch them out without seeing the chandelier however, the shades that are sold for these pieces have clamps that are meant to fit on the bulbs.

removal of chandelier with carefully ,scraping existing shades and apply new shades
