What is it really? I get mixed reviews on the internet. I know that alcohol works as an antiseptic but some say that alcohol in mouthwashes make bad breath even worse because it dries up the mouth making it conducive for bacteria to multiply. Listerine has been around for ages and its going strong despite having alcohol, so why do people say its bad? Is it really?

Perhaps if the alcohol is too strong for the mouth, then is can help dry it out, and it can make the producing of saliva slower than usual. The though comes from the belief that alcohol cause cause dehydration. Listerine has little alcohol content that's why it is effective.

i will tell you precisely what my fiance tells me.. Alcohol-loose mouthwash is for persons who won't be able to cope with the burning sensation that occurs while swishing it around in ones mouth. Alcohol mouthwash kills germs and likewise leaves extra advantageous smelling breath. So i might say that alcohol mouthwash is extra advantageous. purely because of the fact it kills the germs and micro organism that grows on your mouth after eating. :D

That sounds bogus to me. Alcohol evaporates very quickly, and any remaining alcohol will dissolve in your saliva, so there is no way for it to dry up in your mouth.
