I'm not sure what you mean by "formative," but a good rule of thumb for a summary is to first write what you think the article is about, using no more than one or two sentences. Then provide an example of the most cogent arguments, and give your opinion as to whether the author is right about it or not.

For example, if you are summarizing an article on biology, mention the specific body part or disease process studied, give a sentence or two on the methods used in the research, and tell whether or not you feel the conclusions reached in the article are valid, or whether it needs more study.

It would be a good idea to study examples of the summaries in professional journals for your specialty. They tend to have a word limit, and even if you are not writing for publication, a teacher would love to see you are capable of doing so.
