Let's put it this way: What would you think of a Father who did not ever discipline his kids? Is this showing the children that he loves them or that he does not care about them?

A 'Father' who truly cares about and loves his children, will give them unconditional love and punish them when necessary. So, they grow into mature and responsible adults.

Yes, it is both.

But as much as I'm for love, I can't get past the fact that many religious people worship a being who will send me and others to eternal torment. That is not "discipline," as another answerer seems to suggest, since you simply do not learn from it.

I recognize where they are in terms of "spirituality" (whatever that means, hmm?), but I don't know how to respect someone wishing me everlasting suffering.

Yes , that is the beauty of God, is He is not dictator, He lets us have free will to do as we choose , just like when we were kids ,mostly teens and we did what our parents said not to and for example, if your friend was killed by a drunken driver and you drink, well, need I say more ?

Just because the Bible says it doesn't mean that the writers heard it correctly. Go to the source for corrections. I did and boy, did they get it wrong.

Nothing is beyond God's control. He is concerned of everything taking place on earth. Just obedience makes the things done.

because God is inside each one of us (what I like to call instinct), whether we choose to listen to that is up to us.
