Prayer?
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
... And keeping, abiding in God's word?
Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
...And God's power?
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
...And God's work?
But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
...And, the cross?
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

The best way to overcome temptation is with the WORD OF GOD. Whatever area the person is being tempted in; there is surely a scripture that will oppose the tempation. Speak it aloud whenever the temptation comes! Thats what Jesus did when he was tempted by Satan himself (Matthew 4) and it still works the same way for us, today! ;0)

Lust and desires are the natural weakness which can be overcome by the commitment to standards and scrupples but the present day Christainity has thrust open the restrictive codes by making the confession as part of religious practice and crucification as part of their belief.These two things have played havoc with the moral balance of Christain society as such Christains scumb to temptation instead of overcoming them.Jesus taught them kindness and compassion; they do not hestitate putting the generations after generation in miseries just their temptation for oil.Is it not not an irony that Bush the senior was killing Iraqis while Dr. Billy Graham the well known Christain religious scholar was sitting in White House for his success to kill more and more Iraqis including the Christain Iraqis.

We can never completely overcome temptation. If we love God with all of our heart, we will do our best to serve him. We will still have temptations. It is a complicated thing but we need to read the bible for ourselves and not fall into the word of Man.

By standing on the word of God which tells me God has given me a way out of all temptation, that I will be tempted only as much as I can bear, and by remembering that Jesus was tempted but never gave in. The trick is to take the temptation as soon as it starts and nail it to the cross.

The report below from Revelation helps me. By the time I remember that 1) evil will lose in the end, 2) it doesn't even help me, is not on my side at all, 3) Jesus has risked everything and will do / provide anything to help me, 4) list all the times I've been rescued in the past, 5) and then realize if I really want to beat this, I can, I'm so totally jazzed that -- hey, the Christian life is the most sparkling adventure in the world!

Like everyone else, self-control and determination. I don't think being Christian or not will have any impact on overcoming temptation, it is all you and your ability to know what decisions to make as you decide what is right for you to do and the outcomes it my bring.

first of all, we don't always succeed, but as we grow in Christ, pray, read the Bible, study, remain obedient to God, live our life for Him and not ourselves, we become stronger, wiser, healthier, and more joyful, therefore resisting temptation more often. Also, as you overcome certain things, new ones come to take their place.....it is never ending, but oh so satisfying to have God to help us through.

I became a Christian in 1991 and within two weeks I knew I had to give up smoking 30/35 a day cigarettes...not through anyone human telling me but by the conviction of the Holy Spirit. I prayed that Gods Spirit which lives in me would take away any craving for cigarettes and stopped immediately...never having craved one since. The power of God/Jesus/Holy Spirit are awesome!
Best wishes, Mike.
