If an amateur wins the British Open he gets the Trophey but he can only win a certain amount of cash as an amateur. In that case how much can he win and what happens to the rest of the prize money?

He wouldn't receive any money as he would be an amateur the money would go to the next pro who finished behind him.

Well, maybe keep the trophy. The $$ would be then add/split among other players. Example - They say a player has a $300.000 putt because, 3rd place is worth $400,000 and 4th place is only $100,000. Well, if he makes it, that is the difference, but if someone behind him, ties him, then they take 3rd and 4th place money total, and split it. In this case, they would each then get $250,000. So, if 2nd place British Open has 3 players tied, then 3 players would split 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place money. But will research more.

An amateur wins no money in the Open. The money would be won by whoever finished second (assuming they were professional).
