So a lot of people on this forum seem to think that if a girl is not using the pill, a shot, etc. and only using a condom she is irresponsible. They urge her to get on the pill or another form besides condoms. Did anyone ever think about those individuals that are allergic to pretty much all kinds of birth control? I am one of those people, everything besides condoms makes me very sick and the doctors and I decided it would be safer for me to only use condoms.
My fiance is getting a vasectomy as soon as possible, and until then I will keep using condoms. They are just as safe as any other type--and don't make me throw up, bloat, or break into hives.
So what do you guys think? Is it irresponsible to use only a condom, or is it just as good?

Johna--Yes, I saw your question and it prompted this. I am so tired of people saying that it's irresponsible and "just go on the pill" or something. When it's healthier not to, I won't. And they treat us like we're 15, not the adults that we are. Every time I see something like this on Y!A it makes me so angry that people are so dense sometimes.

Kerris--Thank you. Yes, we would rather adopt and he decided that my fiance's going to get a vasectomy as soon as he can. We really don't want our own kids anyway, there's a number of reasons. And yeah, far too many people are irresponsible and that's why there are kids to be adopted in the first place. It's insane.

I think that you raise a good point- HOWEVER the people who are allergic to hormone Birth controll are few and far between. Yes you all exist, but not everyone who refuses to take the pill has a legitimate reason like you do.
Some people are flat out ignorant and don't know that 2 forms of B.c is better than 1. Some people don't realize that your likilhood of pregnancy is higher with just one form (such as a condom.)
Those of us who preach "go on the pill" also know there are HUNDREDS of different types of B.c. From an IUD, to the Norplant, the Depo Shot, to the Nuva Ring, to the patch, etc. Its not just popping a pill anymore. There are LOTS of other ways to get yourself regulated so that you run a smaller risk of pregnancy.
The difference between MANY of those other people and yourself (and people like you) is that they don't even TRY The pill... some of them don't even use condoms. For people who are unwilling to use a condom (or too lazy even) the depo shot or an implant is a great method of birth control.
Besides... do we really want people who are too lazy to use a condom becoming unprepared parents? These are the same people who often times end up on the state's system, or not properly raising their kids b/c they are NOT READY to be parents.
So sometimes suggesting another form of birth controll in addition to a condom is the best thing when people have forgotten about their options.
And for those folks, like yourself, who are allergic, they KNOW they can't take the pill so they should know what their other options are. :)
And by the way -- KUDOS to you and your fiance for being responsible enough to get a vassectomy since you two don't seem to want kids anytime soon. Good job for knowing your options and being responsible!!
:-D

You are responsible and have made an educated decision for yourself and your partner/s with your doctors.
I *think* alot of people are thinking that if "younger" girls are on the pill or some other form of hormonal birth control that they are protecting themselves better from pregnancy and won't have the excuse of "oh we forgot to use a condom" or "it slipped off" or whatever. My concern of telling people to get on hormonal birth control is that it may protect well against pregnancy (when taken properly) but what about all the STDs out there that only condoms help prevent! Shouldn't we be teaching our children either abstinance or at the very least (since I'm not stupid enough to think all teens will listen or not end up in the situation where they are in LOOOOVE) on how to protect themselves from everything that having sex could do to their bodies? Also as you pointed out not all hormonal birth control is good for people. There are always certain risks with taking any medication some way more serious for some then others.
So I guess my simple answer is I think people should always use condoms whether or not they are on hormonal birth control or not because anything else is IRRESPONSIBLE!

It is responsible to be aware of your body and the options that are open to you, as you are. Why on earth would you risk illness in order to please others?
Birth control is a good thing but there are many who are unable to use hormonal types of birth control. My daughter lost 80% of her hair when she was on the shot. She thought she had a skin disease. Come to find out that is one of the less talked about side effects.
I personally think it is just as irresponsible to be unaware of what these hormones are doing to your body. Ever wonder just how something that stops the natural functions of your body can be good for you?
Use the condoms, use your intellect (which you are) and tell everyone else to piss off!

I agree with you completely.
The more choices there are in many ways the better. In discussing contraception some methods suggested hav never been heard of. for example the"Dutch Cap".
I don't believe I have even seen it mentioned in this forum
It is used by the female-you don't have to rely on those nasty men putting the condom on-he does not pop in for a while to warm things up"I'll be careful -oh so sorry I did not mean to do that" ring any bells ladies?
It does not interfere with your hormones.
you can use it while you are menstruating if you so choose to avoid mess
want a baby -just stop using it
Men often prefer it--you still have flesh to flesh contact
Do any of the above sound attractive to you ladies.
The pill.,minipill,depo. IUCD are all good contraceptives but they take forward planning while the condom is readily available can be carried in your hand bag in case he forgot to get some(joke) and does give some degree of protection against STD.
The Cap user I tend to find is used by the more mature female who feels that she wants to have a degree of control in her life.
If someone is on the pill I often advise them to use a condom as well. The pill will stop you from getting pregnant but not from getting a dose.
What do you think-I will try to answer any constructive Q

Where to start?? I am a Liberal, my hubby and I have paid for our own home, food and our daughters first 2 years at College. All of my siblings are Liberal and are doing just fine on their own thank you very much. My CONSERVATIVE bro-in-law however has been on welfare before. Now, picture this, my Mother is left a widow at the age of 44 with 4 kids at home left to raise, my Dad was ill for many years before he died, there was no life insurance. My mother had a job working retail. We received SS death benefits, but were also told we could get food stamps, my Mother turned them down saying others needed them more. I was 13 years old at the time and learned a huge lesson from my Mom, if possible we help those that cannot help themselves. Do you get that??

I think that considering your options, you are being very responsible. If condoms is all you have to use, then not using them would be the only irresponsible action on your part.
