I've heard that some people are against using contraception, and I want to know the reasoning behind this. For some, they believe that using the pill still kills the fetus right when it's conceived. But that still wouldn't rule out condoms--with a condom contraception never begins. I can't use birth control except condoms--the females in my family get very sick from the pill, shots and such. As soon as he can, my fiance is getting a vasectomy to insure that we don't have kids.
If no one had birth control, there would be an even bigger problem of overpopulation. Would all the people against contraception be willing to adopt all of the extra kids that would suddenly be out there if we got rid of all contraception?
I'm adopting, I sure don't want to contribute to an overpopulated Earth. So why say no contraception? What is so bad about choosing to not have kids? Or for that matter, choosing to have kids when you're ready instead of being scared, young, and without enough money?

I never asked abou sex before marriage, thanks. I don;t care what your morals are on that--and we will always use condoms even after we marry.

WordOfLife--Have you adopted any kids lately? Or ever? Have you been to Mexico and seen the children living under the streets? Overpopulation is very real.

The vasectomy is getting done for reasons of not wanting our own kids, and not wanting to pass on the genetics of two not-so-good families.

Jesusfreak--a vasectomy will totally prevent us having children at all. So that would definately mean no abortion. And somehow I don't think us having sex just for fun and love would cause a divorce, considering psycologists say that the more sex one has, the healthier of life they have--even with not one pregnancy. So that seems like an excuse--birth control doesn't lead to unhappiness, divorce, or abortions.

Also, if a man and a woman need children to validate their love and prove that they are together as one--well it sounds like they need some counciling as well.

Doug L--Do you knwo what a vasectomy is? There is no link of a vasectomy to any mental or physical disease. It doesn't mess with hormones or anything like that, and nothing gets taken from your body. Educate thyself. http://www.vasectomy.com/ArticleDetail.asp?ArticleId=4

Looks like you really touched a few nerves here. I believe the decision to have or not have children is up to the individual. And yes, there IS an overpopulation problem and anyone who denies it is an idiot. I guess it's easy to overlook the starving masses of the world when they aren't white and christian. I have no children - by choice. Let's face it: the vast majority of us are physiologically capable of reproducing. What makes this so special? It is only special when those having children are taking full responsibility for those children and giving them the nurturing and foundation for life. Sadly, many parents fail in this. People think they have to have children just because they "can" or because everyone else is doing it. It's just another aspect of the herd mentality. Yes, I admit I'm selfish. I recognize that in myself. Why should a selfish person bear a child? Oh, because it would "change" me? I doubt it. I have nieces and nephews and friends' children that I can enjoy. I have enough self-esteem that I don't have to mold and manipulate an innocent life to feel like I am important. As for "family," well, it's been my experience that family is less about your blood relatives than it is about those people who love you and treat you with respect and caring, regardless of blood bonds. Those people are your true family.

My dear,
Why should it make any difference to you how religious people think about contraception? If you knew how religious people work it out you will find it hard to make up your mind any way. Broadly speaking there is no conception that has taken place if you use any method of contraception. So the issue is not about killing the foetus because there is no foetus to kill in the first place. So contraception is not the same as abortion - which is understandably a far more serious and disordered act. Why is or isn't contraception right has been the subject of controversy and while church ruling - predominantly the Catholic Church - is still against it, in reality there are many mitigating situations in real life.
Regardless of religious demands on the matter I feel that you aught to proceed with some caution regarding having or adopting children and your fiance having a vasectomy - I wouldn't be so rush. By all means use some form of contraception if you have to not to have children, but do not take such drastic measures just yet. In spite of the world's over population there is still some room for a few more generations yet. Try to save the world in other ways; Iam sure the list of ways is endless.
Peace

Some people feel as if one becomes pregnant then it is surly "God's will" Others feel like sex should only happen between married couples thus preventing pregnancy is unnecessary (because of course, marriage is for babies anyhow)
And others ( women) feel as if taking the pill (& such) makes them a wh**e, or that contraceptives make the sex real, then they have to acknowledge that they may be sinning, some feel unforgettable with their own sexuality and may have been taught that it's wrong so using birth control (of any form) is a lingering sign of their sexuality, having "the pill" lying around forces them to acknowledge that they are having, have had or are planning to sex.

Beautiful one, if you mention 'sex' or anything even remotely related to it, many Fundies get all shaky in the knees and start drooling. I am of a mind that it isn't so much the 'sin' factor but their fear of natural sex, among Fundy men the fear of women, among Fundy women, of men. Humankind is reaping the whirlwind, as the cliche goes. Consider the Vatican's absurd positions. Over-population in Africa and Asia is more than a dull statistic, it spells starvation, disease, the deaths of babies in his or her mother's arms, the suffering of the innocent, of the poor, of living human beings on the outside of society looking in. It is obscene, bloody obscene.

The backlash against contrception comes from fundamentalist believers who do not understand science, logic or facts.
'Fundies" mistakenly believe that a human soul ( as ordained by GAWD) is instantly created at the moment of conception. So they fight in knee-jerk reaction to anything that allows a woman to sensibly control her own child-bearing destiny.
Here is a great quote that will help you understand;
"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful".
You may find it hard to believe, but that came from 1st century Rome. Rulers and the preachers that serve them, are perfectly aware that they both need more parishioners to fill their coffers and be their slaves. The real reason religious leaders want to expunge human rights like contraception, is because they want more money. The real reason government is in collusion with these insane ideas, is because they want more tax payers... slaves.
It has always been so, even since the days of Early Rome. It will continue to be so for as long as we allow religious idiocy to interfere with government.
Fight for your rights.
Fight religious interference in government.
Fight the ignorance and evil that religion fosters.

The first thing God did after he created man and woman, was bless them, then he told them to be fruitful and multiply, and to subdue the earth ... over which he had given them dominion.
Up until quite recently, most of the people on earth considered this to be the logical purpose for their lives, and all of the Christian faith traditions believed this to be the divine mission statement for the human race.
And since God never changed, nor did his word, one needs to consider why society's view of this has changed so radically in such a short time.
Rejecting natural fertility is a rejection of one of God's greatest gifts ... a gift that not only blesses, but sanctifies ... when properly used and appreciated.
Consider the POSSIBILITY that God put you and your mate here on this earth to accomplish something more important than your own selfish pleasures.
Also consider the fact that God loves you, that God has already promised that he will provide for all your needs, and that your basic position on this matter demonstrates a serious lack of faith.
There is no overpopulation problem.
There's just a lot of faithless, ruthless, selfish, short-sighted people who don't want to share what they have with others.
Do a bit of research too, on the newly discovered link between vasectomy and early onset alzheimers disease, and on the numerous and often serious side effects experienced by those who have had a vasectomy.

Genesis 38:8-10--
The only instance in the Bible where any method of birth control is mentioned (the ever-popular withdrawal method).
Judah's son Onan's behavior is called "Wicked in the eyes of the Lord" and Onan is killed because of it. More generally, God commands Adam, Noah, and Abraham to "Be fruitful and multiply," suggesting that they are to procreate to the greatest extent possible.
Some Christian groups have interpreted this to mean that birth control itself is evil. And not just birth control, but any misplacement of the male's seed (ie masturbation, oral sex, etc...)
Glad I go to a church where we study the New Testament too!

Because there are too many people who think if they have to deny themselves something, everyone else should too.
Contraception makes it possible to have sex for reasons other than procreation. And we can't have people enjoying themselves!!!!
Why, if people are enjoying themselves, how can you make them feel bad enough about life to suck them into your religion and the promise of a better afterlife??

The fact that you've posted this in the Religion section seems to suggest that you already know the answer, but some consider sex a divine act that humans should engage in only for the purpose of furthering the species.
