I was diagnosed as Bipolar 1 on Thursday (I'm 18) and I kind of wondered of validity of the diagnosis as I haven't had a high energy period in awhile. But right now, I am currently feeling very scared for no reason. It is 3:30 A.M. and I can almost feel as if there is another presence in my room. I am getting paranoid and scared for no reason. I've always had these fears at night (even thinking that someone was under my bed and going to grab my legs), but I never thought too much of it. But right now it's actually severe.
Is this a sign of bipolar disorder, in particular, a manic episode? I don't FEEL happy or euphoric right now... just fearful and scared and as if I can feel a presence.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You sound more anxious, to be honest, and kinda panic attack...You need to report this to your doctor, and make sure that it isn't a side effect of your meds..for one thing...and then,...try to use common sense, check under the beds, turn on a light if you want to...calm down, because no one else is there except your angels, watching over you xxx

My question to you is when you were told that you had Bipolar 1 was any kind of medication subscribed to you? If so hang in there and keep telling yourself this to will pass, because it will. You have to allow the medicine time to work. If you were not given any medication to help you then my recommendation is the same hang in there it will pass and go seek help to receive medication to help it pass faster. I don't think there is a text book to manic episodes and you most likely are having one. The best advice I think I could give to you is again seek out medication that can help you to sleep at night. I'm someone that has gone many many nights without sleep and from experience it only gets worse. It's amazing what a little sleep can do for people with Bi-polar disorder!!

I think as children of all ages, we have the feeling of someone under out beds. I even felt this as a teen. I would not venture to diagnose you. only a doctor can do that. As far as a presence in the room, yeah, I have that feeling too and I'm 61. I don't let it bother me. I prefer to think it is my guardian angel watching over me. Perhaps if you look at that way, you may feel more comfortable. If these feelings really get worse, I would see a counselor. Can't hurt! My biggest fear as a child was thinking someone was going to grab my legs from under the bed. I think this happened because of a movie I watched where this hand would grab someone from under the bed. Watch any horror movies lately. You would be surprised how these bad movies can effect you subconscious mine.

Sounds more like anxiety than mania. Don't go looking for a manic episode just because you haven't had one lately. They can be very sporadic for some bipolars. When you get manic or hypomanic, you don't always notice. Your mind can be too preoccupied with everything else. It's often the people who spend a lot of time with you who point it out.

Hi I used to have anxiety attacks that would generally only come on in the middle of the night. Unlike you I didn't feel a presence but I had severe physical affects such as heart palpitations and inability to swallow and or breath etc. I found out everything I could about panic attacks and overcome them in my own time. Although your condition is different to mine, it is similar in the sense that it is always happening worse at night so my first advice would be try to develop a regular sleep pattern and avoid stimulants such as caffeine and recreational drugs as this will make your condition worse, good luck,,,,

I am Bipolar. I have felt a presence before and was not manic. It seems as though i was talking to the spirit and it did talk back. So you need to talk to a Doc.
