Walk away with a totally disgusted look on your face and mumble outloud that animals don't even have these disgusting habits.

I think she is depressed. Anyone who neglects herself in this way has to have a problem. I've read the other answers and I have to pick up on one assumption that some people have made. What makes people think your mother in law is fat? Cant thin people have these problems? Anyway, I think you should think carefully about this woman's reasons for being this way. Treat her to a pampering session. Do her nails, make up, hair. Help her plan a make over for the house, it could help you bond AND improve the living conditions. And as for the sound she makes in her throat...that could be stress and anxiety, I do it sometimes!!!.
And who are you to say your mother in laws opinions are stupid.?
I think you need to show some tolerance and be a bit more understanding. Have you ever thought it may be YOUR presence that is causing her depression?

i know the throat sound it's pretty gross my mil does it too and my fil blows his nose at dinner tables. if she is living with you and your husband then you have every right to set the rules but i advise you get your husband to tell her b/c if not it'll turn into an argument about who's right. if you are not comfortable with her or the way she doesn't take care of herself your your house you should let her know well let your husband let her know just proceed with caution if all else fails tell her there are too many differences and living together just isn't working out. good luck and you're a stronger women than me living in the same house with your mil.

You are with her son so love is love so be nice to her and treat her with respect by
Grabbing the fat cow and get a hose in the garden on her
remember shes family so had a bit of soap and give her good scrub and make sure she shakes off before she comes back in the house.

No you don't HAVE to live with her.
If you are living there why don't you start cleaning the house then maybe she will help you. It is her house and what she does in it or the noises she makes really are none of your concern. She is letting you live there you should be grateful.

Telling your mother in law she is disgusting is not advisable as a way of building a bond with her.
If living in the same house is unavoidable, then you'll have to get used to it, I'd say. If it's not unavoidable then get to work on making other living arrangements.

Better not open your mouth until you know for sure you have another place to move in to - she may be a pig, but that pig is letting you stay in her house - she may do what I would do if you dared be disrespectful to me in my house, and that would be to throw you out - and I don't mean nicely.

If she's living in your house then you have every right to have her abide by your rules and wishes. But if you're living in hers then either put up and shut up or get out.
