The most common reason is the guy is depressed and thinks that the other person does not like him anyway. So he will ignore her...after all why not. He thinks he has no chance with her anyway...and does not want to be reminded of what she looks like and all. It's easy to forget if you ignore her...then it's like she does not exist.
If the guy is set in his way, you can't do much to open him up. You could try being nice and treating him special...but you would have to go way, way, way over the top to get through his shell. You likely won't want to go that far, as it would be things like touching him and shutting other people out.
