I would like to ask the christians that believe Harry Potter to be evil why they don't feel the same about Lord of the Rings or Disneyland? I know for a fact that many christians take their children to Disneyland. Cinderella's fairy Godmother did magic, Mickey did magic, Sleeping Beauty had a very evil witch in it and many more examples. Yet christians see nothing wrong with this. Lord of the Rings was praised by many christians. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe had an evil magic witch in it, yet churches actually endorsed that movie. What is the difference with Harry Potter? It's the same principle that christians embrace in the other movies, good magic fighting bad. The witch on the Little Mermaid was as wicked as any charachter associated with HP. Please explain the way your church can justify this because it is very confusing to me. I go to an Assembly of God church and I know for a fact that the pastor's grandchildren have Disney movies because I have seen them.

Okay. First, Harry Potter is evil because of the witchcraft. It's about nothing BUT witchcraft. God warns against any occult (commonly known these days as "New Age") For those not strongly close to God, it is too easy to become part of the evil, enjoying the evil thinking and practices. Most don't even know they have been affected. (I have seen the movies and read the books. I enjoy them, but know they are about evil. I would not recommend a new or young Christian see them because they are too susceptible to the lurking evil.)

Lord of the Rings, too, is full of magic. See paragraph above. I suppose it was endorsed by some Christians merely because it was first a classic. But that doesn't make it right. If they wanted to see it, they should have just seen it and not endorsed it. (I enjoy this movie, too. I wish they'd make the prequel "The Hobbit" and others in the Tolstoy line.)

I totally agree about the Disney movies. I actually won't allow my kids to watch, though my sister does. I do not take them to Disney functions. Magic is not make-believe. Kids being exposed to these types of things only makes them more susceptable when real-life magic rears it's ugly head. When they get old enough, and strong enough in Christ, then they will be able to examine such atrocities, knowing that the magic is wrong. I am sure they will find them entertaining.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is actually a Christian book and movie... written by Christians for Christians. Christ is the lion, Satan is the witch. If you watch it again with that in mind, I think you'll gain a whole new respect for the movie.

AND, it is not hypocritical of me to see the evil movies. If I had not, I would have no authority to give you a proper answer.

I'm not who you are asking, but I am a Christian and I have no problem with the Harry Potter books. My gosh, what is wrong with reading about some magic and using your imagination? The stories deal with good fighting evil (which is the same thing going on in real life). The books also get children to read. Reading is fantastic and might just make them want to read more books, even religious books.

"Sorcery is a sin," they proclaim! But they can overlook stoning adulterers and women speaking in church and the Bible's non-condemnation of slavery. It's this picking and choosing and condemning some sins and overlooking others which these same people are doing which gives the rest of us Christians a bad name.

Thank you. Not to mention that Harry Potter teaches good morals and gets kids to read.

By the way, Renee down there is W A R P E D! Her kids will grow up without imagination or any fun at all, and that's horrible. Talk about insanity!

Exactly. A lot of popular kids movies and characters contain some sort of magic. They just want to pick on poor Harry Potter.

Yeah, you made me ask myself WHY?

Well, The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, a Christian author, is perhaps endorsed by the Church not becuse of mere hypocrisy... It's because It kinda relates about the whole story of the Bible... Narnia being this sinful world we live in.. the White Witch being Satan or the Romans who crucified Jesus Christ... Aslan being the ultimate sacrifice to save Edmund as Jesus Christ being the ultimate sacrifice to save us from our sins.. those who take the side of the White Witch which persecuted those in the side of Aslan it's like those Jewish pharisees persecuting Jesus and his disciples, Aslan was alive again as Jesus Christ resurrected from the grave after three days.. Aslan freed those creatures from their petrified state as Jesus Christ freed us from sin's bondage... The battle of Narnia as the Battle of Armaggeddon.. the Happily everafter coronation scene in the end as the New Jerusalem and the reward in heaven in the end of the book of Revelation...

Makes sense?

Forgive those Christians.. perhaps they don't know what they're doing... Full of zeal but without wisdom...
Let's not get really dogmatic about it..
