Settlement represents Church’s largest payout in sexual abuse scandal on account of sexual abuse by catholic church.
LOS ANGELES - The nation’s largest Catholic archdiocese will settle its clergy sex abuse cases for at least $600 million, by far the largest payout in the church’s sexual abuse scandal, The Associated Press learned Saturday.
Attorneys for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the plaintiffs will release a statement Sunday morning and hold a news conference Monday, said Ray Boucher, the lead plaintiff’s attorney.
An anonymous source with knowledge of the deal placed its value at $660 million, by far the largest payout in the church’s sexual abuse scandal. The amount exceeded earlier reports from sources that the settlement would be between $600 million and $650 million — $1.2 million and $1.3 million per plaintiff.

Dear Punter,

First i find it interesting that you attack Christians when the Catholic church is the one who the article focuses on.

That being said- your question is quite relevant because people do not expect a church to violate the very values that it teaches. It doesn't make the teachings false- but it is understandable that those who have been hurt by such actions can feel unable to trust people who should be trustworthy.

But in answering your question- it doesn't change who God is and what He teaches in His Word. God is quite clear about what the behavior of a Pastor and Church leader should be.

Yes- over the course of time the Catholic Church has had a reputation of molesting, and sexually abusing people - and that's terrible and wrong! There's no excuse offered for it- and in fact- my thought is that a lot of the Catholic practices (which are not required in the Bible) may contribute to the situation.

I'm sad as i read the paper and watch the news- and even though many families received monetary compensation- i know the damage that was incurred upon them is terrible!!!

It doesn't change the fact that Jesus died for people's sins. If anything the scandal points out how people do need Jesus and it's more than just going to church- but it's trusting and relying upon Him.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

The key is to not mix religion with the weaknesses of mankind. It is the human male that raped those children and the Church that let them get away with it. They may have had a strong belief in God but the weakness of the human form was more powerful than that belief and they broke their vows and the trust instilled in them. A child rapist is a child rapist no matter what clothes he wears. Some priests might even have joined for the sole purpose of having access to children so that they could rape them. Like I have said. Why the parents don't call the authorities when they find out their child is a rape victim I don't know. The priest went against the Church so why is it that the parents feel obligated to keep the rape within the Church and let them "handle" it. All they did was send the rapist to another Church and new victims. One priest had raped over 200 children in his 30 years as a priest. Both boys and girls. He should get the death penalty for all those lives that he ruined. And the ones at the head of the table who LET him do this should be kicked out and put in prison period for allowing him repeated access knowing what he was doing.
And the Pope said that Catholicism is the ONLY true religion! What a frightening concept that is!!

Those who committed the sins will pay a price far more than any amount of USD payable. Those who suffered the sins have suffered more than any USD payable, and should have their day in court.

Fact now is, they reached a settlement.

Without knowing all the details of what went into the negotiation, one can perhaps surmise it is on balance for both sides - many claims, reaching back to the 40s, besides being time barred, would not have withstood a day in court and will come to a 'I said, he said' situation and will be lost, even if the accusation is true, whilst for the Church, it will come to more public shame and exposure.

Both sides should have their day in court, but God's justice is outside of humankind's purview, and the USD is perhaps all humankind can get out of humankind 'justice' system.

Footnote: It was reported that 40% of the USD600m will go to the lawyers of the plaintiffs.

You will never correctly understand the biblical concept of Christ paying the price for our sins by dwelling on the sins of Catholic priests. Just because a big denomination claims to be the only true Christian church does not mean to say that it is. "By their fruits you will know them. A good tree cannot produce rotten fruit," Jesus advised (Mat 7:16-20). The vile practices of many priests, and the cover-up of Catholic leaders speak loudly of corruption that God will judge. It could be, though, that the false Catholic idea of penance (which included paying money in times past) corrupts Catholic thinking still. The idea that paying money will, somehow, exonerate the sinners, is completely unbiblical and corrupts the doctrine of Christ's atonement, making a mockery of it and him. But these settlements are legally imposed by a secular society, don't forget, and lawyers get a huge percentage of it.

Also, before pointing the finger at those evil Catholic priests, look within your own ranks. Child molestation and sexual abuse of women goes on in every religion, by hypocrites who preach one thing then violate every godly command, especially by men who get into positions of spiritual power. There may be a far lesser degree of child molestation in some religions than in others, praise God, but don't be too quick to trumpet the sins of others so loudly. It could come back to haunt you.

Our sins are payed for, but we offer ourselves as a living sacrifice for all God has done for us. We sacrifice our time, effort, and money for his as a way to worship him.

But about the scandal, look, you can't say we're all like that because one "Christian" does stuff like that. Humanity has free will, and sometimes it betrays somebody. Just another ploy of the enemy.

I don't know where the catholic church get there ideas,But it does sound like a money make scheme if you ask me. You can't pay for your sins, Jesus Christ already has, but in order to clean the sin slate you have to believe that he died for them and accept him in your heart its stupid anyway to think you have to pray to the priest and he'll talk to God for you. GOD said that all can come unto him and the Bible tells us that Jesus is (THE HIGH PREIST) .Don't give your money to the catholic church give your heart to God.

There are consequences for sin here on earth, but believers don't have eternal condemnation.

Yeah, but they probably have to say 20 "Our Father"s and 10 "Hail Mary"s, too. That should settle it.
