The easiest spot to look first is to see if there is a pad just to the right of the thermostat housing near the intake if it is a 440 the mark will be there and it will say b 440 if it is the original b is for 1966 the first year of the 440.If it is a 383 the mark will be under the distributor on the pad that slants downward. If you see an hp stamp that means its the high performance version. If you see a maltese cross it is a factory defect motor and will have undersized rod, main or cam bearings.Hope this helps.

The V8 engines for the 1966 Polara and Monaco models are all the valve-in-head type with hydraulic tappets. The engines vary in piston replacement, valve springs and power output. The 318 has a 9 t0 1 compression ratio. The 383 is a 9.2 to 1 for regular fuel. premium fuel is 10 to 1 compression. The 426 has a 10.3 to 1 compression ratio. The 318 has an internal oil pump and the 383 and 426 external oil pumps.

Those cars came with a 383 in most instances. The picture is of a big block ( 383, 400, 440 ). If you look under the left cylinder head( drivers side ) where it meets the engine block there will be numbers on a flat machines surface. If it says 383 it's a 383 and so on. If someone changed it to a 400 or 440 then that is the number that will appear. I hope I helped.

You can look on top of the block at the front at each side, there is a flat machined on the block with the engine size marked. One pad is next to the distributor and the other is opposite, even with the water outlets. From the picture is is definitely a B or RB engine.
According to this Wikipedia artice it will be 383 or 400 B, or 440 RB.

According to the American Encyclopedia of Automobiles:
There are two variants of the 383-cid engine, one at 270HP and one at 325HP, the other was a 440-cid with 350 horsepower.
Definitely looks like a 383

It looks like a 383,400,or 440. It's a big block for sure. There is a small pad to the right of the dist. (in front of the intake manifold)that says if it's a 440 or a small pad under the dist. if it is a 383.

the 66 monaco could have one of several engines. i could identify if you could provide a pic. it could be a 383 /426 or 440 all of which are big blocks and will interchange most parts with each other. the serial # on the block would be the best way to identify.

In a drag race the 289 would easily win.But in a race to see which engine held up longer under grueling conditions the old slant six would smoke the 289.
