Count how many times you hear the name "Joseph Smith". Then do the same for "Jesus Christ".

Report back the numbers, please.

No it is not supposed to be funny. Just a simple request. I'm taking a poll and would like to know the answer. That's all.

OK I will -- it's a good exercise

Maybe other religions should do the same and instead of Joseph Smith -- enter in a name or phrase popular with your religion.

ADDED:
Here is my Report
It is the Sunday before Pioneer day so I tract how many times the following were said:

Jesus Christ = 201
Joseph Smith = 1
Pioneer/Early Saints = 8
Brigham Young = 0
Gorden B Hinkley = 4
Ezra Taft Benson = 1
Spencer W. Kimble = 1

I attended Sacrament Mtg., part of Primary, part of Sunday School, and Priesthood Mtg. (Elders Q.)

That is the tally -- hope it helps

I saw your question a couple of days ago and found it interesting, so I bookmarked it and decided to try this little experiment of yours. I heard the name Jesus about 100 times or so (sorry, this is only an approximation because I couldn't keep an accurate count as I was busy taking care of two children as well). If you include the names Lord or Savior, this number would also be somewhat higher [Note: I did not count anything mentioned in prayers or hymns, either]. I only heard the name Joseph Smith once (I'm pretty sure this one is an accurate count).

How about you read the "Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ", and underline how many times it says Jesus Christ. I don't think there is a single page in the book that doesn't mention his name.

I understand your concern though. Often times, it's easy to forget about teaching the basic gospel principles, and we spend too much time on Church history.

Anyways, it doesn't matter, because when we talk about Joseph Smith we are talking about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. I think we say the word "Of" more than either name, so perhaps the Church should be called "The Church of "Of" of Latter-Day Saints". So, instead everyone this week count how many times you here the work "Of".

Considering it was Pioneer week and 2 talks were specifically about pioneer ancestors, Joseph Smith was named 3 times, and "the prophet" specifically meaning him, another three times. I lost count of how many times the Savior was mentioned, but it was over 150.

Howdy C & R. Interesting question you have here. It sort of relates back to the one you had earlier about how LDS should be called "Smithians" and how we think Smith did more for mankind than Christ. I also saw where you said that you heard this from LDS people many times. I can honestly say I have been a member of the church for 19 years and I have never heard anything of the sort. As a "Mormon", I accept Jesus Christ as the Savior and the only begotten Son of God. My time in the Church has only strengthened my faith in him.

Guessing by your recent questions, you seem to be hard-pressed to get Mormons to say that we hold Smith in a higher regard than Jesus Christ. I wish you good luck, but I think all LDS folks will agree with me when I say that notion is ridiculous. We believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior. He is the central figure of our Church.

For what it's worth, that's my $0.02. Have a good weekend.

When we count how many times Jesus Christ is said can we include things like if they say Lord, Savior, Redeemer, God, Creator, Him ( referring to Jesus Christ), etc. ?

I think I might have mentioned this before - the word "Jesus" was not to be used except in prayer, or very rarely in talks as it was a sacred name. Apparently 'Yeshua' is a temple name too, or someone you waters your lawn.

So, you'll need to listen for "Elder Brother or other euphemisms, and possibly the same thing for Lucifer, Satan, Advesary to see if the fear card is being played.

The Peepers Institute Estitmate:
#1 Satan, or any of his dominion
#2 Joseph Smith, and more if "Hail to the Man" is sung.
#3 Gordon Hinckley, or other General Authority
#5 Jesus by name or reference. Prayers don't count since their closing is nearly automatic.

The numbers will be skewed thanks to the prayers.

In the name of Joseph Smith Amen.
