I have seen quite a number of dying patient. Sometimes in a person with a heart ailment say Myocardial Infarction: the heart would just stop suddenly (cardiac arrest) you wouldn't know. For those who had brain death, the breathing would start to cease while the heart still keeps beating. For other dying cases, the heart would start to function abnormally and slow down in variable paces- some deteriorating pretty quick but some would take some time. As the heart stops beating the respiration would start to slow down and would also stop gradually. Sure mostly certainly gasp for air until their last breath. What the mind thinking? Well nobody came to life after death to tell us definitely but my suggestion is that they would think of the loved ones left behind whom they are worried, they would be sorry for themselves for dying, they may think of any thread of hope of surviving, some may have peace of mind accepting their impending death, some may had gotten unconscious for sometime before death so I am not sure if there will be any thoughts in their minds.

Long live!

Unfortunately, not too dead people are around to tell us this sort of stuff. Also, people die of many different causes, and each case is different. There is some anectodal information from near-death events, such as rescued drowning persons, or from people who have heard "last words" from expiring individuals. On TV, the heart seems to stop, often suddenly, but this may be proceeded by disorderly heart action, mainly in heart attacks.

People die different ways, and most of the time what they're thinking is something they take to the grave with them. The only thing that's pretty constant is that it seldom looks like what they show in the movies.
