Friends of mine got a high sided Rubbermaid storage box as a litterbox.
Works like a charm when the cat refused to use a hooded/covered box.

I purchased a litter box from petco a while back that is pretty much a box with hole cut in the top with inset grooves. This way when the cat leaves the litter box gravity pulls the litter back towards the opening. If a new litterbox is out of your price range I would suggest getting a litter mat, outdoor carpeting also works well. Buying a litter that has a low dust ammount might also help.

Honestly, I don't think it can be done. I have a covered litter box, with the flap on it as well as a rubber cat mat in front of it. It has this little nodules that seperate their paws and allow the litter to drop out, so it wont get everywhere. However, I still end up having litter strung all across my bathroom and the rest of the house for that matter. My youngest cat has this thing, where if he is in the litter box he is fine, but he is scared of coming out and getting caught coming out of it. So when he is done, he sprints out of the box and into the other room. So inturn it makes litter fly EVERYWHERE... But in normal casses, I would get a covered litter box, Wal-Mart and a cat mat, Wal-Mart also ( Every pet store will sell them as well) and use them. Hopefully they will catch all of the litter. Oh and another thing you can do is buy a cheap kitchen rug and place underneath the box/mat so that will get the brunt of the left over litter, so it wont ruin your carpet.
Good luck

We keep a newspaper under the box (it sticks out 6" on all sides) for this reason.

You may have too much litter in the box too, the sides can't stop all the digging. Try keeping between 1 and 1 1/2 inches in the pan instead of higher. If you've got 3 or 4 inches in, that's too much.

It helps to keep a box on a wood or linoleum floor, so a broom can clean it up quick, but if you only have carpet, keep the vaccuum handy I guess.

Get a deeper litter box and use less litter- but clean it out more frequently. You could also put the litter pan in a shallow cardboard box so when Kitty kicks the litter out of the pan, it will go into the box.

you can get a high walled litter box or a completely enclosed litter box. I think they also make extension like things that make a guard around the litter box top to prevent this. I would just get an enclosed litter box though.

They make a litter box with a top on it , so it is enclosed. they have them at Pet smart. it kind of looks like a pet carrier but solid with no door that closes. its just open. they also make a little door mat tp out in front of the litter box to catch the litter off their feet when they get out of the box . Good luck

Try one of the litter boxes with the hoods. It's enclosed except for the opening, has snaps to take off when cleaning it. Then get one of those little rubber mats for when she walks back out it traps the litter in it. Works great for my cats, he'd dig to China if he could :)

I would recommend getting an enclosed litter box with a ramp that has slots in it to clean litter off of cat's paws. You can find these litterboxes at PetsMart, and they work wonders!
