I was asked to say a few words at a neighbor's funeral today as he was a friend. All I could say was, "May you be in heaven 3 days before the devil knows you're dead!" A smile came over the faces of some of the people present. He kinda liked life and took it in stride. Was i right in saying that?

I think my friend liked it too. He had a smile on his face or is that the way they fix a dead person up?

It sounds like you honored your friend's sense of humor and expressed positive wishes for the welfare of his soul. Both of these things are very appropriate to do at a funeral, I would think.

Yes. As you knew your friend well, you said what you knew to be appropriate. Your friend in Heaven was glad you were there, keeping your friendship alive.

It's hard to know what to say but that's a pretty good line. I think it was a toast huh?

I think it was cute. You were speaking for the benefit of your friend and no one else. I think he loved it!
