There was a recent article discussing DNA research done on wild and domestic cats which showed that all domestic cats were descended from 5 female cats in the Near Eastern subspecies, which is one of 5 (the others being African Wild Cat, Chinese desert cat, European wild cat, and one i forgot)
Since cats mostly live off of small animals (mice, etc.) they would want to live were these are common which is brushy, shrubby, edge of woods kinds of places. Open areas leave them vulnerable and heavy forest that kills off the ground shrubs leave too few hiding places.
Here tis

I think you are confusing wild cats with domesticated cats. Domestic cats had wild ancestors which did live in forests, deserts etc. Today there are still small wid cats (pampas cat, iromote cat, sand cat, etc.) found in many parts of the world that do live in forests, deserts, etc. Todays domestic cat really has no "natural" environment as they have been "domesticated" and no longer are part of the natural ecosystem. I guess their most "natural" habitat would be in someone home or apartment.

a forest/mountainous area, like where tigers/bobcats live today. very similar to today's wild/big cats. they hunted their prey, climbed trees, were basically the same as wild cats today are. many people think today's housecats can be traced to a middle eastern wildcat that still lives in the deserts of israel and saudi arabia. of course, nobody today was alive way back when cats were domesticated and there are no solid records regarding this from way back then, so there is no definite answer! :)

The domestic cat was derived from wild cats, who lived in forests and jungles. A domestic cat's natural habitat, however, is in your house, on your lap, or curled up in your bed. :)
