Greenpoint is a nice neighborhood close to the Manhattan Bridge. Williamsbourg is also nice. As far as Brooklyn or Manhattan, the rent is triple in Manhattan. The nicest neighborhood in Brooklyn is Brooklyn Heights by Cadman Plaza, but that's also upscale and high priced.

Try Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, or Boerum Hill.
