What is a good mid-distance training program for a sophmore in high school (I'm a girl too) to start training w/for track? I don't really want to run over a mile or two at a time either. What are some good exercises to stay conditioned during the winter ( I don't have a treadmill, or go to a gym, and it's too cold to run outside) Would it be better to start training now and lose some (or most)of my conditioning in the winter or should I just start at the beginning of spring?

too cold to run?!! I used to run in the snow! well...if you dont' have a track and wont run outside or go to a gym...there really isnt much you can do to condition. mid-distance usually does more sprintwork, but it looks like you wont be able to do that.

do you have stairs in your home? you could try just doing stairs- running up and down. I used to do that sometimes for a short workout, and I know my coach used to do that too. Try and go up and down the stairs as many times and as fast as possible without stopping. do it a few times....jog slowly around your house to get warmed up and cool down. Also, you could lift weights or do abwork, curls, etc. to build up muscle.

however, if you are planning to condition now and "lose" the conditioning you have worked up in the winter, you may as well not start running. Once you stop running, you will lose about everything you have gained (unless you have been running extensively for years) within about 4 weeks of not running. Running now and not during the winter will not benifit you much at all when springtime comes around- you may be just as out of shape as the other girls...if you dont run in the winter, at least try to come up with some excersizes or workouts even if they dont involve running

You don't have a treadmill, don't go to gym, feel too cold to run outside....sounds like you want to stay home and be fit as well.

I guess the only thing you could do is power walk inside the house. From kitchen to dinner room, to living room, to bedroom...If your house has stairs, you can go up and down for hrs. But, I am sure, very soon you would be bored.

Actually, running outside is not bad at all. When you are running, you won't feel cold. Try find some nice parks to run. I personally like to run early in the morning when I can hear the birds and see little animals in the park. It is indeed cooler in the morning. Or, you can try running in late afternoon before the sun is set. It should be warmer. Once you get used to like, you would like it and you won't feel cool to run outside anymore.

I started marathon training in Feb and did the 1st marathon in June with 5:45 finish time. Not too bad for 1st timer. Now, I enjoy running. Before my next marathon, I participate half-marathon or other shorter race. It is fun. Try look up materials in the following sites.

C'mon Kat !! Running outside is great. My only other suggestion is that you do weights for upper body strength which will complement your running, but that requires a gym. So basically, like your other responders, I don't have much to offer.
